What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Blueprint Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Blueprint Engineer, you need strong technical drawing skills, proficiency in CAD software, and an understanding of building codes and construction principles, typically supported by a degree in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and BIM systems, as well as relevant certifications, is essential. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help ensure precise designs and clear collaboration with project stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for delivering accurate blueprints that meet safety standards, client requirements, and project timelines.

What are some common challenges faced when working as a Blueprint Engineer, and how can they be overcome?

Blueprint Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex client requirements, ensuring design accuracy, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these, strong communication and organizational skills are essential, as well as proficiency with CAD software and attention to detail. Additionally, regularly collaborating with architects, project managers, and contractors helps ensure that any design discrepancies are resolved early and that project timelines are met.

What is the difference between Blueprint Engine vs Civil Engineer?

AspectBlueprint EngineCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires technical training or certification in blueprint design and draftingRequires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field, with licensure in many regions
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, often in offices or design studios, collaborating with engineers and architectsField and office work, overseeing construction projects, site inspections, and design planning
Industry UsageUsed mainly in architectural and engineering design firms for creating detailed plansEmployed across construction, infrastructure, and urban development projects

Blueprint Engineers focus on creating detailed technical drawings and plans, often with specialized software, while Civil Engineers oversee the entire project lifecycle, including design, construction, and compliance. Both roles are essential in construction projects but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What is a Blueprint Engineer?

A Blueprint Engineer is a professional responsible for creating detailed technical drawings, plans, and schematics used in construction, manufacturing, or engineering projects. They translate design concepts and project requirements into precise blueprints that guide the building or assembly process. These engineers often use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate closely with architects, project managers, and other engineers to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Their work is essential for turning ideas and specifications into actionable plans for construction or production.

Job description

Metallurgical Lab Technician

Engine Power Components, Inc.

Opportunity at Grand Haven, Michigan facility

Why you should join our team:

The Metallurgical Lab Technician plays a critical role in supporting and improving our induction heat treating operations, which are central to our manufacturing process.

This is a hands-on position working both in the metallurgical lab and on the production floor. You will be directly involved in ensuring product quality, supporting process development, troubleshooting issues, and driving continuous improvement of heat treat processes.

If you enjoy working with materials, solving problems, and seeing the direct impact of your work on high-performance components, this is an excellent opportunity to grow your skills in a specialized and in-demand field.

Who we are:

Engine Power Components is an IATF 16949 certified, global leader in camshaft design and production. We serve a worldwide customer base and supply many diverse market segments. If it has an engine, we probably supply a camshaft for that application.

We support heavy-duty on and off-road markets, marine and recreational vehicles, light-duty trucks, passenger cars, motorcycles, auxiliary power units, racing and high-performance vehicles, and large horsepower applications for ships, locomotives, mining equipment, and power generation.

Strong customer relationships with globally recognized engine manufacturers, along with a talented and dedicated team, have allowed Engine Power Components to grow from a small operation founded in 1979 into one of the worldโ€™s leading camshaft suppliers.

As Metallurgical Lab Technician, you will:

  • Support and troubleshoot induction heat treating processes on the production floor
  • Ensure all products meet customer specifications and internal quality standards
  • Perform metallurgical inspections including hardness testing, microstructure evaluation, magnetic particle inspection, and etch analysis
  • Prepare and analyze samples (cutting, mounting, polishing, etching, cross-sectioning)
  • Perform measurement and documentation activities related to APQP and PPAP (capability studies, ISIR layouts)
  • Verify incoming material meets certification and quality requirements
  • Conduct daily process checks, including operator compliance reviews and Millipore testing
  • Train operators on process requirements and verify effectiveness through audits across all shifts
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities
  • Participate in internal audits and calibration system processes
  • Communicate with suppliers regarding material quality and assist with non-conformance resolution
  • Maintain lab operations including ordering supplies, chemical handling, and equipment upkeep (e.g., mag systems)
  • Ensure proper calibration and certification of testing equipment (gages, hardness testers, black lights, ovens)

As an ideal candidate for Metallurgical Lab Technician, you would:

  • High School Diploma required; technical training in metallurgy or materials preferred
  • 1โ€“3 years of experience in a metallurgical lab, heat treating, or manufacturing environment
  • Basic understanding of metallurgy, material behavior, and heat treat processes
  • Experience with inspection methods such as hardness testing, magnetic particle, or etching preferred
  • Familiarity with measurement tools, metrology standards, and blueprint reading
  • Working knowledge of quality systems and continuous improvement practices
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hands-on environment
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP systems
  • Valid driverโ€™s license

If you are passionate about metallurgy and want to build expertise in induction heat treating, we would love to speak with you.

We reward our employees with excellent benefits, including competitive wages, family health, dental, vision & life insurance, paid vacation, and a 401(k) plan. If you are looking for a great opportunity, consider joining our team. Help us write the next chapter and be part of a great story!
