About The Role

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is seeking a transformative Senior Manager of AI Engineering to lead the technical strategy and execution of our next-generation agentic AI systems. In this high-impact role, you will define the technical architecture, frameworks, and best practices that will shape the future of our AI-driven solutions. The ideal candidate is a strategic leader with deep technical expertise who can provide clear vision and mentorship to a talented AI development team. You will be responsible for ensuring our agentic systems are scalable, robust, and secure, driving innovation while maintaining the highest standards of engineering excellence. This role is eligible for our Flex Persona for candidates local to our Boston, MA office.

What You'll Do
  • Define the Strategic Vision: Establish and champion the strategic and technical vision for the AI engineering team, ensuring it aligns perfectly with our broader business objectives.
  • Architect for Scale: Design scalable, robust, and resilient agentic architectures, leveraging advanced AI capabilities and seamless external integrations.
  • Set the Standard for Excellence: Establish, enforce, and refine coding standards, development guidelines, and engineering best practices for the entire AI agent ecosystem.
  • Lead and Mentor: Provide strong technical leadership, hands‑on guidance, and active mentorship to the AI development team, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Drive Innovation: Lead research and evaluation of new agentic technologies, emerging AI/ML models, and cutting‑edge tools to keep our solutions at the forefront of the industry.
  • Ensure System Integrity: Take ownership of the security, performance, and reliability of all agentic solutions, implementing governance and best practices across the board.
  • Manage Agile Teams: Effectively manage engineering teams within a matrix delivery organization, utilizing Agile methodologies to ensure efficient and predictable execution.
What You'll Bring (Required Qualifications)
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8‑10 years of progressive leadership experience, with a proven track record in both functional and people management roles.
  • 5+ years of experience managing technical teams within a matrix delivery organization using Agile methodologies.
  • Demonstrated experience defining a strategic technical vision and successfully aligning engineering teams with business goals.
  • Strong background in designing scalable agentic architectures and establishing development best practices.
  • Solid understanding of core AI/ML concepts, including model training, Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG), and major AI platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
  • Deep expertise in Governance, Information Security, Solution Architecture, and Systems Integration.
  • Hands‑on programming skills in languages such as Python, R, or Java for building and implementing AI models.
What Will Make You Stand Out (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Proven experience developing and deploying agentic AI solutions on one or more leading cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Practitioner‑level or Professional‑level cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Professional Cloud Architect).

Salary Range

$173,430.00 - $211,970.00

The job posting range is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range, and the range may be modified in the future. An employee’s pay position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, performance, shift, travel requirements, sales or revenue‑based metrics, and business or organizational needs and affordability.

This job is also eligible for variable pay.
