What engineers make $500,000?

Senior blockchain engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in cryptography and smart contract development, and often working at leading tech companies or in high-demand sectors can earn salaries around $500,000 or more. Compensation may include base salary, bonuses, and equity, especially in startups or large firms with competitive pay structures.

What do blockchain engineers do?

Blockchain engineers develop, implement, and maintain blockchain-based systems and applications. They work with blockchain protocols, smart contracts, and cryptographic security, often using programming languages like Solidity or Go, and require knowledge of distributed ledger technology and consensus mechanisms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Blockchain Engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Blockchain Engineer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Solidity, Go, or Python, a deep understanding of blockchain architecture, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Hands-on experience with distributed ledger technologies, smart contract development tools, and blockchain frameworks like Ethereum or Hyperledger is typically required, along with certifications such as Certified Blockchain Developer (CBD). Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration skills, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These skills are critical to designing secure, scalable blockchain solutions and working efficiently within dynamic engineering teams.

What is a Blockchain Engineer job?

A Blockchain Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining blockchain systems and applications. They work with blockchain protocols, smart contracts, decentralized applications (DApps), and security frameworks. Their role includes implementing cryptographic techniques, optimizing blockchain architectures, and integrating blockchain solutions with existing systems. Blockchain Engineers often collaborate with developers, data scientists, and business teams to create secure and scalable blockchain-based applications.

Will AI replace blockchain engineers?

Blockchain engineers design and develop blockchain systems, and while AI can assist with tasks like code analysis and automation, it is unlikely to fully replace the specialized skills required for blockchain development. AI tools can enhance productivity but still require human oversight for security, architecture, and innovation in blockchain projects.

What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

In the US, senior blockchain engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills in cryptography, smart contracts, and decentralized applications, can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, often including bonuses and equity. High-level roles in finance, technology firms, or startups with significant funding may also offer such compensation levels for top-tier professionals. Achieving this salary typically requires advanced expertise, certifications, and a strong track record in blockchain development or leadership.

What does a typical day look like for a Blockchain Engineer?

A typical day for a Blockchain Engineer often involves designing, developing, and implementing blockchain-based solutions, writing and testing smart contracts, and collaborating closely with product managers and other developers to refine system requirements. You might participate in code reviews, identify and resolve security vulnerabilities, and keep up-to-date with emerging blockchain trends. Problem-solving and cross-functional teamwork are common, as projects often require input from cybersecurity, backend, and frontend specialists. This dynamic mix of activities offers opportunities for continuous learning and skill development in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Fireblocks

New York, NY

Job description

The world of digital assets is accelerating in speed, magnitude, and complexity, opening the door to new ways for leveraging the blockchain. Fireblocks' platform and network provide the simplest and most secure way for companies to work with digital assets and it trusted by some of the largest financial institutions, banks, globally-recognized brands, and Web3 companies in the world, including BNY Mellon, BNP Paribas, ANZ Bank, Revolut, and thousands more.

About the Team

The Wallet Flows team is leading a strategic transformation of Fireblocks' core infrastructure. We're methodically redesigning and rewriting major system components to create next-generation architecture that enhances security, scalability, and performance.

Our team blends industry veterans and rising talent, united by excellence and a results-driven mindset. We value seasoned expertise alongside fresh perspectives, fostering an environment where pragmatic solutions and innovation thrive together.

About the Role

We are looking for a Full Stack Engineer with a strong blockchain foundation. In this role, you will work across the entire stack  from user-facing interfaces to backend services and on-chain integrations  to build and evolve the systems that power institutional digital asset operations.

You will serve as a technical bridge between raw blockchain capabilities and the polished wallet experiences delivered to customers. This means diving into protocol-level details one day and refining a transaction workflow UI the next. Your blockchain expertise will directly inform how we design, build, and ship features that handle billions in transaction volume.

What You'll Do
  • Design and build end-to-end features across frontend, backend, and blockchain layers that power Fireblocks' wallet infrastructure
  • Architect and deliver mission-critical components while maintaining 24/7 operations with zero disruption to live transaction volume
  • Research and integrate blockchain technologies including Layer 2 solutions, cross-chain bridges, staking protocols, and DeFi integrations into the Fireblocks platform
  • Develop intuitive, responsive interfaces that surface complex blockchain operations in a clear and actionable way for institutional users
  • Collaborate with blockchain foundations, vendors, builders, and customers to understand protocol design, tooling, and integration requirements
  • Balance pragmatism with vision - make smart trade-offs to deliver incremental value while steadily advancing toward next-generation architecture goals
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, and security teams to define technical requirements and deliver cohesive solutions
  • Mentor and guide other engineers on blockchain technologies, full stack patterns, and best practices
What You'll Bring
  • 5+ years of full stack development experience with modern frontend frameworks (TypeScript) and backend services ( Go, or Python)
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in the blockchain ecosystem - working with protocols, on-chain data, smart contracts, or wallet infrastructure
  • Knowledge of consensus mechanisms, cryptographic primitives, and distributed systems
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture, API design, and modern frontend patterns
  • Demonstrated ability to apply AI tools for programming with experience in vibe coding
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams and fast-paced environments
  • A curious mind, willing to learn, including new coding languages and tech stacks.
Preferred
  • Experience building blockchain solutions for enterprise or institutional use cases
  • Understanding of security best practices for smart contracts and blockchain systems
  • Experience with MPC, multi-signature wallets, or other advanced cryptographic techniques
  • Experience with institutional DeFi, staking protocols, or custody solutions
  • Experience modernizing and transforming mission-critical production systems with minimal disruption
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; Master's degree preferred
Success Criteria & Impact
  • You deliver features end-to-end - from UI to on-chain integration - with high quality and minimal iteration
  • Your blockchain expertise is consistently leveraged as a foundation for architectural and product decisions
  • You are considered a subject matter expert by internal engineering teams across both application and protocol layers
  • Consistent contribution to the Fireblocks platform by pushing impactful design and code to production

For employees hired to work from our NYC HQ, Fireblocks is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range is specific to New York City, and takes into consideration a wide range of factors that are reviewed when making a hiring decision, such as years of experience, skills, and other business needs.

It is not typical for a candidate to be hired at or near the top of the pay range and each compensation decision is dependent on each individual case. A reasonable base salary range estimate for this position is $177,000 to $230,000. The base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which for some roles may include a target bonus, a very competitive equity grant, and very generous benefits. While we believe competitive compensation is a critical aspect of you deciding to join us, we do hope you also spend time considering why our mission and culture are right for you. We are creating something transformational here, and we hope you are as excited about the future as we are.
