PEST CONTROL TECHNICIAN
Department: School Plants
Pay Grade: U110
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs intermediate-skilled work in the control of pests and weeds in and around school buildings. Work is performed under regular supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Controls pests and weeds; sprays; fogs; baits; traps.
- Sprays, fogs, baits, and traps to control pests and weeds in and around school buildings.
- Controls roaches, ants, rodents, birds, snakes, termites, etc..
- Inspects property, problem, analyses, and determined most effective solution.
- Receives work orders and work requests; determines nature of the problem; undertakes necessary actions.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing pesticide application.
- Ensures safety of students, teachers and employees while performing duties.
- Maintains records and files and prepares reports on activities.
- Operates spraying equipment, bait gun, power fogger, and various power and hand tools in performance of duties.
- Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or its equivalent.
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- One year of experience in pest and weed control.
- Current registered pest technician license.
- Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of IPM.
- Knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology used to control pests and weeds.
- Knowledge of the use and characteristics of pesticides.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work.
- Skill in the use of tools and equipment.
- Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans, or specifications.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a respirator.
- The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
