Biotech Strategy Consulting information

What is biotech strategy consulting?

Biotech strategy consulting involves providing expert advice to biotechnology companies on business strategy, market entry, product development, regulatory pathways, and commercial operations. Consultants in this field help organizations navigate complex scientific, regulatory, and competitive landscapes to make informed decisions and maximize growth. They often conduct market analysis, develop strategic plans, and support mergers, acquisitions, or partnerships. The goal is to help biotech firms achieve their business objectives and bring innovative products to market efficiently.

How do biotech strategy consultants typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project?

Biotech strategy consultants work closely with client stakeholders—often executives or R&D leaders—to deeply understand their business objectives and challenges. Collaboration involves frequent meetings, workshops, and data-sharing sessions to align on project goals and validate findings. Internally, consultants engage with multidisciplinary teams, including analysts, scientists, and industry experts, to synthesize research, develop strategic recommendations, and ensure deliverables are both actionable and tailored to client needs. This collaborative approach helps ensure that strategies are grounded in real-world data and are feasible for implementation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biotech strategy consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biotech Strategy Consultant, you need a strong background in life sciences or biotechnology, analytical acumen, and often an advanced degree such as a PhD, MBA, or related field. Familiarity with market analysis tools, data analytics software, and regulatory databases is typically required, along with experience using presentation and project management platforms. Outstanding communication, critical thinking, and client management skills help you build trust and deliver actionable insights in high-stakes environments. These competencies are crucial to drive evidence-based recommendations, support strategic decision-making, and ensure client success in a complex, rapidly evolving industry.

Job description

The Commercial team at EyePoint focuses on bringing innovative therapies to patients by ensuring healthcare providers, partners, and communities have access to treatment, reimbursement, and are able to use the product appropriately. This team uses data-driven insights, market access strategies, and a patient-centric approach to improve awareness, access, and adoption of EyePoint’s therapies to help improve vision outcomes for people with serious retinal diseases.

EyePoint Pharmaceuticals is seeking a Vice President, GPO, Pricing & Contracting, and Strategic Engagement to build and lead the Company's commercial relationship with large, consolidated retina provider organizations — including private-equity-backed management services organizations (MSOs), IDN- and ASC-owned retina practices, retina networks, and ophthalmology-aligned Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs). This leader will build and run a field team that engages the C-suite and business leadership of these organizations (CEO, COO, CFO, and practice ownership, or the relevant IDN/ASC executive leadership) to negotiate GPO membership and organization-level purchasing agreements for a Medicare Part B buy-and-bill retina therapy. This is a build-from-the-ground-up executive role combining strategic account leadership, contract negotiation, and field team leadership.

Key Accountabilities

Retina care has consolidated rapidly under PE-backed MSOs, IDN- and ASC-owned practices, and multi-site groups, creating a business-entity layer above the individual physician that behaves like a customer in its own right - similar to how a hospital IDN or GPO functions, but for outpatient retina.

GPO & Strategic Account Strategy
  • Build and own the segmentation and prioritization strategy for ophthalmology-aligned GPOs, PE-backed MSOs, and IDN- or ASC-owned retina practices and networks (e.g., organizations comparable to Retina Consultants of America, EyeSouth Partners, US Retina, Prism Vision Group, and hospital-system-affiliated retina/ASC networks)
  • Develop account-specific strategic plans for top-tier organizations, aligned to overall launch and commercial objectives
  • Track the evolving retina consolidation landscape - new MSO formation, PE ownership changes, network mergers - and adjust account strategy accordingly
Pricing & Contracting
  • Lead negotiation and execution of GPO membership agreements and organization-level purchasing agreements, including volume commitments, rebate/tier structures, and administrative fees
  • Own the commercial terms and structure of these agreements end-to-end, ensuring alignment with overall pricing strategy and profitability targets
  • Partner with Legal, Finance, and National Payer Accounts to ensure contract structures are compliant with government pricing rules (e.g., GPO fee limits, 340B implications) where applicable
C-Suite & Field Team Leadership
  • Build and lead a field-based Strategic Account team responsible for day-to-day relationships with the executive/business leadership (CEO, COO, CFO, practice ownership boards, or equivalent IDN/ASC executive leadership) of assigned retina networks, GPOs, and IDN/ASC-owned retina practices
  • Personally engage the C-suite of the largest and highest-priority organizations, serving as the senior executive relationship owner
  • Recruit, coach, and develop the Strategic Account team as the organization scales post-launch, operating in a player-coach capacity during early-stage build-out
Cross-Functional & Executive Engagement
  • Represent GPO/strategic account strategy and performance to the CCO, executive team, and Board as needed
  • Partner with the VP, Head of National Payer Accounts to ensure organization-level contracts align with payer coverage and government pricing strategy
  • Partner with the Trade and Distribution lead to ensure contracted organizations have the distribution/inventory support needed to fulfill purchasing commitments
  • Coordinate with field Sales leadership so account-level agreements translate into physician-level adoption and pull-through
QualificationsRequired
  • 12+ years in pharmaceutical/biotech GPO, strategic accounts, or key account management, including 5+ years at the Director/Senior Director level or above with direct C-suite negotiation ownership
  • Direct experience negotiating GPO membership or large multi-site organization purchasing agreements in a buy-and-bill specialty/biologics environment
  • Retina or broader ophthalmology experience strongly preferred; familiarity with the PE-backed MSO, IDN-affiliated, and ASC-owned retina practice landscape a significant plus
  • Demonstrated success building and leading a field-based strategic account team from the ground up
  • Deep understanding of GPO contracting mechanics (membership tiers, rebates, administrative fees) as distinct from payer coverage contracting and distribution/logistics contracting
  • Executive presence and a proven track record building trust with C-suite executives (CEO, COO, CFO) of physician group organizations
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (MBA, healthcare-related) a plus
Preferred
  • Existing relationships with executive leadership at major retina networks, MSOs, or ophthalmology GPOs
  • Experience navigating a first-in-class or category launch at a small/mid-cap biotech (vs. established in-line brand management)
  • Familiarity with 340B and GPO-related government pricing implications
