Biotech Procurement information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a biotech procurement specialist?

To thrive as a Biotech Procurement Specialist, you need expertise in supply chain management, negotiation, and knowledge of biotech materials and compliance regulations, often supported by a degree in business, life sciences, or supply chain management. Familiarity with procurement systems such as SAP or Oracle, and certifications like Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM), are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set high performers apart in this role. These skills ensure cost-effective sourcing, regulatory compliance, and smooth operations in the fast-paced, highly regulated biotech industry.

What are some common challenges faced in a biotech procurement role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Biotech Procurement often face challenges such as sourcing specialized scientific equipment and reagents with limited suppliers, managing strict regulatory and quality requirements, and adapting to rapidly changing project needs. Building strong relationships with vendors, staying updated on industry regulations, and collaborating closely with research and development teams can help address these challenges. Additionally, developing negotiation skills and maintaining a proactive approach to risk management are key to ensuring timely and cost-effective procurement in a dynamic biotech environment.

What is biotech procurement?

Biotech procurement refers to the process of sourcing, purchasing, and managing the supplies, equipment, and services required for biotechnology research, development, and manufacturing. Professionals in this field ensure that laboratories, production facilities, and research teams have timely access to high-quality materials such as reagents, lab equipment, and specialized instruments. They also negotiate with vendors, manage supplier relationships, and ensure compliance with industry regulations and quality standards. Effective biotech procurement is critical for maintaining smooth operations and supporting scientific innovation within biotech organizations.

What is the difference between Biotech Procurement vs Biotech Purchasing?

Biotech Procurement involves strategic sourcing and supplier negotiations, focusing on long-term supply chain management. In contrast, Biotech Purchasing handles day-to-day order processing and vendor communication. While both roles require knowledge of procurement processes, procurement emphasizes strategy and supplier relationships, whereas purchasing centers on transaction execution.

Associate Director, Global Strategic Sourcing and Procurement

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals

Madison, WI • Hybrid

Full-time

Posted 24 days ago

Job description

Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq ARWR) is a commercial stage biopharmaceutical company that develops medicines that treat intractable diseases by silencing the genes that cause them. Using a broad portfolio of RNA chemistries and efficient modes of delivery, Arrowhead therapies trigger the RNA interference mechanism to induce rapid, deep, and durable knockdown of target genes. RNA interference, or RNAi, is a mechanism present in living cells that inhibits the expression of a specific gene, thereby affecting the production of a specific protein. Arrowhead's RNAi-based therapeutics leverage this natural pathway of gene silencing.

Arrowhead is focused on developing innovative drugs for diseases with a genetic basis, typically characterized by the overproduction of one or more proteins that are involved with disease. The depth and versatility of our RNAi technologies enables us to potentially address conditions in virtually any therapeutic area and pursue disease targets that are not otherwise addressable by small molecules and biologics. Arrowhead is leading the field in bringing the promise of RNAi to address diseases outside of the liver, and our clinical pipeline includes disease targets in the liver and lung with a promising pipeline of preclinical candidates.

Arrowhead's corporate headquarters is in Pasadena, CA with research and development teams in Madison, WI & San Diego, CA, and a state of the art manufacturing facility in Verona, WI. Our employees are nimble, science-driven innovators who are collaborating to bring new therapies to patients in need.
