How much do biomedical researcher jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for biomedical researcher in the United States is $31.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.28 and $35.10 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What do you do as a biomedical researcher?

A biomedical researcher studies biological processes and diseases to develop new treatments and improve healthcare. They conduct experiments, analyze data, and use laboratory tools such as microscopes and cell cultures. This role often requires strong analytical skills, knowledge of biology and chemistry, and adherence to safety protocols.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biomedical Researcher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biomedical Researcher, you need a solid background in biology, chemistry, and data analysis, typically backed by at least a master's or doctoral degree in a related field. Experience with laboratory techniques, statistical software (such as SPSS or R), and compliance with research regulations is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are essential for designing robust experiments, ensuring data integrity, and successfully collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to advance scientific knowledge.

What are some common challenges faced by biomedical researchers when conducting experiments, and how do teams typically address them?

Biomedical researchers often encounter challenges such as variability in biological samples, complex data analysis, and the need for rigorous regulatory compliance. To address these, research teams prioritize meticulous experimental design, collaborate closely with statisticians and bioinformaticians, and follow standardized protocols to ensure reproducibility. Regular team meetings and interdisciplinary collaboration are key strategies in troubleshooting issues and advancing research efficiently.

Is biomedical research a good career?

Biomedical research is a valuable career that involves studying biological processes to develop medical advancements. It typically requires strong analytical skills, laboratory work, and often a graduate degree such as a PhD or master's. The field offers opportunities in academia, industry, and healthcare, with job stability and growth potential depending on experience and specialization.

What are the career paths in biomedical research?

Biomedical researchers can pursue various career paths including academic research, industry roles in pharmaceuticals or biotech companies, government research agencies, or clinical research organizations. Advancement often involves gaining specialized skills, advanced degrees such as a Ph.D. or M.D., and experience with laboratory techniques, data analysis, and grant writing.

How much money do you make as a biomedical researcher?

Biomedical researchers' salaries vary based on experience, education, and location, but the median annual wage in this field is around $85,000. Entry-level positions typically start lower, while those with advanced degrees or specialized skills can earn over $100,000 annually. Many researchers work in laboratories or academic settings, often requiring a master's degree or Ph.D.

What are biomedical researchers?

Biomedical researchers are scientists who investigate biological processes and diseases to improve human health. They use laboratory experiments, clinical studies, and data analysis to understand the causes of diseases, develop new treatments, and advance medical knowledge. Their work often bridges the gap between basic science and clinical applications, contributing to innovations in medicine, diagnostics, and therapies. Biomedical researchers may specialize in areas like genetics, pharmacology, immunology, or neuroscience, working in academic, government, or industry settings.

About the Job
ย

The Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences needs an experienced researcher to support collaborative cancer research. This content expert will apply their experience to collaborate with the research team and external partners to bolster interdisciplinary molecular biology research by generating manuscripts and processed data files to be submitted for peer review; they will develop the materials into sections for extramural grant submission. The position requires creativity, independence and development of new approaches and demonstrated ability to anticipate pitfalls and unexpected outcomes and the ability to articulate the significance of the work in the broad terms of biomedical sciences. The term of the position is 3-6 months dependent upon funding.

Location and Work Environmentย

  • ASVM Building, St. Paul Campus of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.ย
  • Hybrid opportunity with on- and off-campus communications with the Boris-Lawrie Lab.

  • PhD in the biomedical sciences/biochemistry
  • Postdoctoral experience in cancer and virology
About the Department
ย

The biomedical research within the Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences encompasses Infectious and Chronic Disease Biology with emphasis on basic research of fundamental mechanisms, preventing zoonotic transmission and applying insights from comparative medicine.

By using retrovirus models, the Boris-Lawrie lab investigates the molecular basis that infection disrupts the cell's protein synthesis machinery. This fundamental knowledge determines whether or not physiologic stresses culminate in pathology or, in the case of a resilient host - recovery.ย

Their studies of HIV and other retroviruses unveiled sabotage to the cell's protein synthesis machinery and also, the hosts ability to recover from this stress. Investigations exposed and characterized a specialized protein synthesis pathway licensed by RNA-cap hypermethylation that enables hosts to recover from viral sabotage and physiological stressors. Since some cancers can recover from chemotherapeutic stress, specialized translation is being investigated in chemoresistant cells. Our long term goal is to control specialized translation to counter the resilience of these cancers. \https://retrovrna.umn.edu/ย
