How much do biomedical machine learning jobs pay per hour?
What is a biomedical machine learning?
A Biomedical Machine Learning job involves developing and applying machine learning algorithms to analyze biomedical data for healthcare and research applications. Professionals in this field work with medical imaging, genomics, electronic health records, and wearable device data to improve disease diagnosis, treatment, and patient outcomes. They collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and data scientists to design predictive models and extract insights from complex biological data. This role requires expertise in machine learning, data processing, and domain-specific knowledge in healthcare or life sciences.
What does a biomedical machine learning do?
A typical day in Biomedical Machine Learning involves cleaning and preparing biomedical datasets, developing or refining machine learning models, running experiments, and interpreting results in collaboration with domain experts such as bioinformaticians and clinicians. Professionals often participate in team meetings to discuss project goals, share insights, and adjust research directions based on feedback. The role may also involve reading scientific literature to stay current with new methodologies and contributing to academic publications or technical documentation. Working closely with both technical and healthcare-focused colleagues, you'll help translate data-driven insights into meaningful biomedical solutions that impact patient care or research outcomes.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in biomedical machine learning, and why are they important?
To thrive in Biomedical Machine Learning, you need a solid background in statistics, machine learning, programming (Python or R), and a strong understanding of biological or medical data, often supported by advanced degrees in computer science, biomedical engineering, or related fields. Experience with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and familiarity with biomedical datasets is highly valued, and certifications in data science or biomedical informatics can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams are crucial soft skills. These competencies are vital to developing robust models that address complex healthcare challenges while ensuring scientific rigor and regulatory compliance.

Job description
Research Assistant Professor (Non-Tenure Track) - Cutaneous Bioengineering Department of Dermatology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Advance skin-targeted biomedical technologies at the engineering-dermatology interface! The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Department of Dermatology invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor (non-tenure track / appointment stream) with strong interests in cutaneous bioengineering. This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and highly collaborative research environment focused on developing clinically translatable biomedical technologies for skin-targeted applications.
The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge projects centered on skin-targeted platforms and wearable diagnostic technologies to monitor and regulate systemic immunity. Research is highly translational, integrating engineering, biology, and clinical insights, with validation using advanced human skin models and in vivo animal models.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, fabricate, and evaluate biomedical technologies, including structural, electrical, and biological characterization
• Conduct advanced directed research to achieve project objectives
• Develop clinically translatable technologies for skin vaccination and wearable diagnostics
• Perform in vitro and in vivo validation using human skin models and animal models
• Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data with scientific rigor
• Assist in preparation of publication-quality figures, manuscripts, grant or proposal materials, and quarterly progress reports (including written summaries and presentation slides)
• Present research findings at laboratory meetings, departmental seminars, scientific conferences, and weekly project meetings
• Support management of laboratory resources, equipment, and shared research infrastructure
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and trainees
• Apply strong project management skills to track deliverables, manage timelines, and ensure compliance with reporting requirements
• Excellent communication skills for technical reporting, presentations, and stakeholder engagement
• Exercise advanced problem solving to anticipate risks, develop mitigation strategies, and adapt to evolving technical challenges
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of overall project goals
Required Qualifications and Skills
• PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a closely related field
• Postdoctoral training with demonstrated progression in research management and productivity
• Strong record of peer-reviewed publications in biomedical engineering or related fields
• Demonstrated experience in the design, manufacturing, and evaluation of biomedical technologies
• Expertise in one or more of the following areas: biomimicry, biofabrication techniques, biomaterials, biosensors, wearable electronics, and machine learning
• Experience with mechanical and rheological testing of biodegradable or soft materials
• Hands-on experience working with mouse models, human tissue models, and cellular biology techniques
• Proficiency with molecular and immunological assays, including qPCR, ELISA, and flow cytometry
• Evidence of strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Join us in advancing next-generation skin-targeted biomedical technologies!
