Department Summary

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at SJSU offers dynamic BS BME and MS BME programs. Located in Silicon Valley, we collaborate with biomedical engineering industries to ensure our graduates are industry-ready. Our programs emphasize a practical approach built on a strong academic foundation and involve industry experts who contribute to teaching and share practical experiences.

The full-time faculty are active researchers and attract major funding from federal agencies. Research areas include advanced biomaterials, orthopedic applications, 3D printing, microfluidic devices for diagnostics, nanotechnology for drug delivery, and cardiovascular devices, among others.

Brief Description of Duties

Lecturers in the Biomedical Engineering Department are employed on an as-needed basis to teach one or more classes, including labs. Lecturers are expected to have expertise in the subject matter of the class or lab. The regular duties of the lecturer include:

  • Develop all necessary course materials, including course syllabus, lecture notes, slides and handouts, practice problems, and assessment tools (quizzes, exam problems and questions).
  • Plan and deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials in accordance with standard university practices.
  • Coordinate the activities of lab teaching assistants and instructional student assistants when applicable.
  • Grade course assignments, examinations and project reports, and assign appropriate grades in a timely manner at the end of the semester.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Organize classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Offer and schedule classes in the mode listed (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).
  • Be available to meet with students during weekly office hours.
  • Enforce academic policies in the assigned course, including reporting and addressing academic integrity concerns.
  • Post final grades in a timely manner at the end of the semester.

Applicants must be committed to teaching at a high academic and professional caliber, with a student-centric approach, contributing to the development of students as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Applicants should have a strong commitment to: (a) teaching and working with a diverse student population at undergraduate and graduate (MS) levels, (b) curricular innovation to advance the Biomedical Engineering Department’s programs, and (c) laboratory development to enhance education and research. Development of externally funded research programs and laboratory capabilities is encouraged.

Required Qualifications

Candidates are expected to have earned at least a MS degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is required: biomedical electronics, bioinstrumentation, biomedical and clinical imaging, biomechanics, biomaterials, biomedical device design and/or manufacturing, or other related areas.

Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as might be gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching and related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A PhD degree and/or several years of relevant industry or research experience.
  • Ability to evaluate adult learners, demonstrated by satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. For range placement details, refer to University Policy S21-2.

Anticipated starting salary:

  • L-A / Range 2 - $5,507 to $5,959
  • L-B / Range 3 - $6,221 to $7,481
  • L-C / Range 4 - $6,825 to $9,431
  • L-D / Range 5 - $8,593 to $10,347

Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate for full-time AY faculty; part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate × 12). See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

Employment Conditions

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., preventing discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, health and safety). Conditional Offer

The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment are conditional and may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information or if information is knowingly falsified. Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to the order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association.
