What Do Biomedical Engineers Do?
A Biomedical Engineer is an expert in the fields of medicine and biological sciences. They use their extensive knowledge base to develop different kinds of equipment and devices with the end goal of improving the effectiveness of patient care. Biomedical Engineers are critical thinkers and analysts. Their time is spent brainstorming solutions to medical problems and designing new devices, such as diagnostic machinery and even equipment for artificial body part generation. It is the job of a Biomedical Engineer to maintain the equipment they develop and to train other clinicians on proper usage and upkeep. In addition to the hands-on aspect of this career, Biomedical Engineers also dedicate time to researching medical dilemmas, studying up on biological discoveries, and assisting in the development of new scientific advances.
What are some common challenges biomedical engineers face when working on interdisciplinary teams?
What is the difference between Biomedical Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?
| Aspect | Biomedical Engineer | Mechanical Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Biomedical Engineering or related field; often licensed or certified | Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; licensure varies by role |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, medical device companies, research labs | Manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, research facilities |
| Industry Usage | Healthcare, medical device development, biotech | Automotive, aerospace, energy, manufacturing |
Biomedical Engineers focus on designing and improving medical devices and healthcare solutions, working mainly in healthcare settings. Mechanical Engineers have a broader scope, working on machinery, systems, and products across various industries. While both roles require engineering degrees, their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

Job description
The Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota is seeking a highly motivated and qualified postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Ultrasound Laboratory led by Dr. Azra Alizad (Department of Radiology) and Dr. Mostafa Fatemi (Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering).
Using state-of-the-art research ultrasound systems, our highly productive and multidisciplinary team investigates a broad range of ultrasound-related research topics, with a strong emphasis on developing innovative ultrasound technologies and translating them into clinical practice. Current research areas include but not limited to quantitative high-definition microvasculature imaging, perfusion imaging for peripheral arterial disease, ultrasound elastography, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical imaging and diagnostics.
The Research Fellow will have the unique opportunity to work under the joint mentorship of Dr. Alizad and Dr. Fatemi, contributing to both technology development and translational ultrasound research. The fellow will collaborate closely with physicians, scientists, engineers, and trainees across Mayo Clinic to develop, validate, and translate innovative ultrasound technologies into clinical practice.
A Research Fellow at Mayo Clinic is a temporary position intended to provide training and education in research. Individuals will train in the research program of a Mayo Clinic principal investigator. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants.
