What Does a Bioinformatics Associate Do?

The role of a bioinformatics associate is to perform detailed data analysis in a biology or life sciences research lab. An associate is a staff scientist or researcher, and they have significant responsibilities within the lab structure. They are responsible for conducting information support using primary research as well as developing models using a data algorithm or other analytical tools. A bioinformatics associate uses these to analyze the information and data sets collected in the lab. They may also develop a storage and archiving system so that other researchers can access data sets. Qualifications to become a bioinformatics associate typically include a master’s degree or Ph.D.

What does a Bioinformatics Associate do?

A Bioinformatics Associate is responsible for analyzing and interpreting complex biological data, often using computational tools and software. They work closely with scientists to manage and process large datasets, such as genomic sequences or protein structures. Their tasks may include developing workflows, running bioinformatics pipelines, and helping to visualize and present results. Typically, they support research projects in fields like genomics, molecular biology, and drug development. Bioinformatics Associates play a key role in translating raw biological data into actionable scientific insights.

How does a Bioinformatics Associate typically collaborate with laboratory scientists and data analysts on research projects?

Bioinformatics Associates often serve as a bridge between laboratory scientists and data analysts, translating experimental requirements into computational workflows and helping to interpret complex biological data. They regularly meet with lab teams to discuss project goals, data quality, and analysis strategies, ensuring that bioinformatics approaches align with experimental designs. Collaboration is highly iterative, involving feedback loops to refine analyses based on preliminary findings and to troubleshoot data issues, which helps drive research projects forward efficiently and accurately.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bioinformatics Associate, and why are they important?

A Bioinformatics Associate requires a strong background in biology, computer science, and statistics, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with bioinformatics tools such as BLAST, Python, R, and experience with genomic databases are commonly expected, along with knowledge of data visualization platforms. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals interpret complex data and collaborate with scientific teams. These skills ensure accurate analysis, meaningful insights, and successful contributions to research projects in a rapidly evolving field.

Job description

About the Role:

The Bioinformatics Research Associate III is a key driver of commercial success, working with a Genomics Research Scientist to perform routine and custom bioinformatics analyses for commissioned Service projects. The Research Associate leads and executes advanced computational analyses through the application of genomics tools, approaches, and expertise to support the customer’s goals and the success of the Services team. The role serves as a technical resource and cross-team collaborator, contributing to complex projects from analysis design to data delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the application of short-read and long-read sequencing analysis pipelines for our suite of genomic approaches (CUT&RUN, CUT&Tag, Fiber-seq, etc) used in Services projects, ensuring robustness, reproducibility, and comprehensive documentation

  • Design and implement custom analyses and data visualizations to answer the customer’s biological questions of interest, leveraging relevant datasets to support success.

  • Create slide decks summarizing the study design, computational approaches, quality control checks, and results for each project.

  • Act as the Genomics representative on customer-facing data delivery calls

  • Manage and prioritize multiple bioinformatics workflows in alignment with data delivery deadlines

  • Proactively identify analytical needs and technical challenges, develop strategies to resolve them, and communicate progress and outcomes to key stakeholders, including the Genomics Team, Services Project Managers, and senior leadership.

  • Independently curate and maintain rigorous documentation of workflows, algorithms, and results, adhering to company standards and ensuring reproducibility and compliance.

  • Propose new computational approaches and contribute to experimental design, including hypothesis generation, troubleshooting, and refinement of assay performance.

  • Develop hypotheses, troubleshooting strategies, and future opportunities independently, with limited guidance from a Research Scientist.

  • Actively participate in team meetings and cross-functional teams, integrating R&D, Services, commercial, and executive stakeholder feedback to drive project outcomes.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and tools in bioinformatics, incorporating new methodologies where appropriate to maintain a competitive edge.

  • Other Research Associate-related duties and projects as required.

  • Prepares effective presentations for lab meetings and external communications, organizing content with goal-oriented logic flows, providing clear and precise introductions, using graphic illustrations for complex explanations, designing impactful figures, and adapting presentation pace to engage the audience effectively.

  • Take the lead in guiding and mentoring new and/or more junior Research Associates in analytical methods, coding best practices, project management, and experimental design.

  • Professionally communicate data, insights, and scientific rationale professionally and confidentially, with precision and clarity across written, verbal, and collaborative contexts.

  • Models company values through integrity and a high standard of performance and professionalism in daily responsibilities and team interactions.

  • Consistently demonstrates reliability through timely execution, proactive communication, and support of team workflows and shared goals.

  • Openly accepts feedback, responds constructively, and adjusts to support continuous improvement.
