Essential Job Duties
The Research Associate conducts independent and collaborative research focused on the development and application of genetic engineering and gene editing technologies in ornamental crops. 
In this role you will support a multidisciplinary research program investigating the use of CRISPR-Cas systems to improve economically important ornamental species, including hosta, miscanthus, tripidium, Liriope, and Pennisetum. You will design and execute molecular biology experiments, analyze and interpret data, contribute to scientific publications and grant proposals, and provide technical leadership and mentorship to graduate and undergraduate students. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct Genetic Engineering and Gene Editing Research:
  • Design, plan, and conduct research utilizing CRISPR-Cas gene editing technologies in ornamental crop species, including hosta, tripidium, miscanthus, Liriope, and Pennisetum.
  • Perform sequence analysis, target gene identification, and guide RNA (gRNA) design.
  • Conduct gene cloning, vector construction, and molecular characterization of genetic constructs.
  • Develop and optimize plant transformation and gene editing protocols for ornamental crops.
  • Analyze transgenic plants using molecular and sequencing techniques to confirm gene edits.
  • Perform phenotypic, trait, and molecular analyses of edited plants.
  • Collect, manage, analyze, and interpret experimental data using appropriate statistical and bioinformatics methods.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure compliance with laboratory safety and research protocols.
  • Contribute to the development of new research concepts, methodologies, and experimental approaches.
Research Collaboration, Scientific Communication, and Mentorship:
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Assist in the development of grant proposals, funding applications, and other sponsored research submissions.
  • Collaborate with faculty, research staff, and external partners on interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise graduate and undergraduate students in molecular biology, plant biotechnology, and laboratory techniques.
  • Provide technical guidance and feedback on research methodologies, experimental design, and data interpretation.
  • Present research findings at laboratory meetings, professional conferences, and stakeholder events as appropriate.
