This role is to provide environmental consultancy leadership within the SAMS Enterprise delivery team, with a focus on marine biodiversity, nature enhancement and habitat restoration, within commercial sectors such as but not limited to, offshore renewables, oil and gas and aquaculture. This is a key high level technical position to develop and deliver high-quality consultancy services to industry and regulators, ensuring projects are delivered effectively to time, cost and quality as per the agreed contractual requirements and to the ISO9001 standard.

Job Purpose
  • Work with clients to identify how they can meet their marine biodiversity monitoring or enhancement/restoration goals (either statutory/regulatory or voluntary) identifying appropriate mechanisms and co-developing client proposals and projects as required.
  • Work with clients to navigate the regulatory framework and identify the most appropriate mechanisms for project delivery.
  • Liaise with the SAMS knowledge base to produce ecologically coherent, scientifically sound and defensible marine biodiversity monitoring or enhancement/restoration projects within the client’s scope.
  • Design and deliver projects working with our Project Managers that support and deliver marine biodiversity monitoring, enhancement and restoration goals.
  • Remain up to date with rapidly evolving policy and regulatory developments in this area across the UK and Europe.
  • Collaborate in the development of new research aligned with opportunities within SAMS Research and Enterprise commercial strategy direction and priorities.
  • Drive opportunity generation working with the Business Development Manager to find new avenues of commercial work.
  • Engage proactively with SAMS Enterprise marketing activities.
  • Attend and lead relevant scientific and commercial conference participation.
  • Help secure and deliver commercial contracts, including tender preparation, data processing and analysis, quality assurance, and report writing.
Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a highly motivated consultant with an enthusiasm for the study and conservation of the marine environment. Demonstrable experience (e.g PhD or Masters preferable, consultancy experience essential) with a focus on marine biodiversity. You should be experienced in the development and delivery of commercial contracts, be able to work collaboratively as part of a small team and communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders including regulators, industry and colleagues.

You will have the ability to analyse complex temporal and spatial datasets and possess technical knowledge and expertise of licensing, consenting or regulation connected to biodiversity from industrial sectors such as marine energy, fisheries or aquaculture.

In addition, candidates will require experience tendering for commercial contracts, production of the management/delivery method, pricing, contract strategy and/or planning/time scales, along with the ability to explain scientific concepts to a varied audience, including disseminating results of scientific research.
