What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Biochemistry Lab Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Biochemistry Lab Intern, you need a solid understanding of biochemistry principles, laboratory techniques, and often enrollment in or completion of a relevant science degree. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, basic analytical software (like Excel or GraphPad Prism), and adherence to safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative research environments. These competencies ensure accurate experimentation, reliable data collection, and productive teamwork in the lab.

What does a Biochemistry Lab Intern do?

A Biochemistry Lab Intern assists with various laboratory tasks under the supervision of experienced biochemists. Their responsibilities often include preparing chemical solutions, conducting experiments, maintaining laboratory equipment, and analyzing data. Interns gain hands-on experience with techniques such as chromatography, electrophoresis, and spectrophotometry. This role provides valuable exposure to laboratory protocols and scientific research, helping students or recent graduates build practical skills and knowledge in biochemistry.

What are some common challenges faced by a Biochemistry Lab Intern, and how can they overcome them?

Biochemistry Lab Interns often encounter challenges such as mastering complex laboratory techniques, managing time effectively during experiments, and adapting to a fast-paced research environment. To overcome these, it is helpful to seek guidance from mentors, actively participate in lab meetings, and thoroughly review laboratory protocols before starting experiments. Developing strong organizational skills and maintaining clear, accurate lab notes also contribute to success and can help interns quickly become valuable team members.

Job description

Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Biology

Working at Moffitt is both a career and a mission: to contribute to the prevention and cure of cancer. As the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center based in Florida, Moffitt employs some of the best and brightest minds from around the world. Join a dedicated team of nearly 10,000 who are shaping the future we envision. Moffitt has been recognized as a Best and Brightest Company to Work for in the Nation, a Digital Health Most Wired Organization and continually named one of the Tampa Bay Time's Top Workplaces. A National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center since 2001.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Cancer Biology

A postdoctoral position is available in Dr. Lixin Wan's group at Moffitt Cancer Center Department of Molecular Oncology.

The research in Dr. Wan's lab is focused on protein post-translational modifications. We are interested in understanding how these modifications are misregulated in tumor cells, tumor-infiltrating immune cells, and tumor-interacting stroma cells. We are also interested in developing next-generation techniques to characterize these modifications. Our current projects include the multifaceted roles of ITCH in melanoma and the melanoma immune microenvironment, the context-dependent functions of master cell cycle regulator APC/C in breast cancer and ovarian cancer, the crosstalk between tumor cell aneuploidy and innate immunity, and several others.

The lab uses a wide range of approaches in our projects: molecular biology, protein biochemistry, in vitro cell culture models, xenograft and syngeneic mouse models, genetically engineered mouse models, various CRISPR-based techniques, and genomic/transcriptomic/proteomic omics techniques. Our recent representative publications: Qing et al, Nature Communications 2019; Han et al. Nature Communications 2019; Dai et al. Cell Reports 2022. Others can be found on Dr. Wan's Google Scholar page.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Experienced in molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry techniques including cloning, virus delivery system, CRISPR/Cas9 system, DNA/RNA manipulation, protein purification, and immunoblot.
  • Animal handling, mouse modeling and small animal imaging experience.
  • Basic imaging techniques including immunofluorescence, live color imaging.
  • Basic bioinformatics skills.
  • Previous experience in next-generation sequencing techniques (RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, etc) and/or proteomics is a plus.
  • Previous immunology experience is a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with PI on the project planning; design and conduct experiments independently; document and organize the data routinely.
  • Learn and develop research techniques and lab protocols.
  • Develop scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Work with collaborators and core facility staff on interdisciplinary experiments.
  • Supervise research assistants and graduate students.

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • MD or PhD in Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics or related.

Interested applicants should apply online via Moffitt Career site, additionally send a single PDF file that includes a cover letter summarizing their research training and accomplishments, a personal statement of scientific interests and goals, current CV with recent publications, and contact information for three references to Dr. Lixin Wan.
