Job description

Summary

The student tutor conducts one-on-one or small group tutorial sessions in the content area of biology for nursing, specifically for BIO 220, BIO 240, and BIO 253 courses. The student tutor tutors a diverse population of undergraduate students in the Content-Area Tutoring Center. The peer tutor works in the Center in-person a minimum of 10 hours per week, Mondays through Fridays.

Essential Functions

1. Provides one-on-one and small-group tutorial services to a diverse population of undergraduate students. The tutor:

  • Identifies students' content-area skills needs.

  • Differentiates strategies and instructional materials to meet individual students' needs.

  • Assists student in understanding the material while fostering student autonomy.

  • Engages students in tutoring sessions by utilizing active learning strategies.

  • Motivates students by being an active listener.

  • Provides positive feedback and makes recommendations for further study or practice, and respects students' diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives.

2. Documents student work and progress by:

  • Using the processes and systems established within the Content-Area Tutoring Center to document student progress.

  • Entering all data in a timely fashion as specified by the Glenn Hubert Learning Center's Manager.

  • Communicating with the Glenn Hubert Learning Center's Manager regarding students with challenging or unique situations and documenting record details of such situations through the specified means within the Content-Area Tutoring Center.

3. Participates in professional development and training sessions as related to tutor responsibilities. The tutor:

  • Maintains currency in the content area by reviewing the course syllabi and relevant course materials.

  • Actively participates in learning community meetings.

  • Participates in mandatory training sessions throughout the semester.

  • Maintains currency with technological resources for instructional and recordkeeping purposes.

  • Monitors and arranges for replenishment of consumable materials used in the tutoring environment.

  • Develop and facilitate workshops/short videos related to BIO 220, BIO 240, and BIO 253 classes.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Must be a current Barry University student enrolled full-time.

  • Must work a minimum of 10 hours per week consistently.

  • Must be able to work for at least two semesters consecutively.

  • Must possess excellent communication skills.

  • Must be punctual, organized, professional, and courteous.

  • Must have a current 3.5 GPA.

  • Must have earned a grade of an "A" in the BIO 220, BIO 240, and BIO 253 classes.

  • Must have a professional faculty recommendation letter from the biology department.

  • Must be in good academic standing.
