Bim Automation information

Is BIM automation a good career path?

BIM automation involves using software tools and scripting to streamline building information modeling processes, making it a valuable skill in architecture, engineering, and construction industries. It offers opportunities for specialization, increased efficiency, and demand for professionals proficient in BIM software like Revit and Dynamo. As the industry continues to adopt digital workflows, BIM automation can be a promising career choice for those with technical skills and an interest in innovative design processes.

What is the difference between Bim Automation vs Bim Modeler?

AspectBim AutomationBim Modeler
Primary FocusAutomating BIM workflows, scripting, and process optimizationCreating, editing, and managing BIM models
Skills RequiredProgramming, scripting, BIM software proficiency3D modeling, BIM software expertise, design understanding
CertificationsRevit, Navisworks, Dynamo certifications often preferredRevit, AutoCAD, Navisworks certifications common
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, construction companies, BIM service providersArchitectural firms, engineering consultancies, construction companies

While Bim Automation specialists focus on streamlining BIM processes through scripting and automation, Bim Modelers concentrate on creating and managing detailed BIM models. Both roles require BIM software knowledge, but Bim Automation emphasizes programming skills, whereas Bim Modelers focus on design and modeling expertise.

How does a BIM automation specialist typically collaborate with architects, engineers, and construction teams during a project?

A BIM Automation Specialist works closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to streamline project workflows by developing and implementing automation tools, scripts, and processes within BIM software. They facilitate data exchange, automate repetitive modeling tasks, and ensure consistency across project documentation. Effective communication is essential, as the specialist often gathers requirements from team members, provides training on automation solutions, and troubleshoots technical issues to support seamless collaboration and project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BIM automation specialist?

To thrive as a BIM Automation Specialist, you need expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), proficiency in scripting languages like Dynamo or Python, and a background in architecture, engineering, or construction. Familiarity with BIM software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and relevant APIs or plug-ins is typically required, along with certifications like Autodesk Certified Professional. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and collaboration skills make a candidate stand out in cross-disciplinary project environments. These skills are crucial for streamlining workflows, improving project accuracy, and enabling efficient collaboration in complex building projects.

You’ll assist with Revit model setup, content management, maintaining standards, and ensuring quality and accuracy across projects. The role also helps keep teams aligned by supporting coordination and improving workflow consistency.

  • Health and family care leave is available to both union and non-union employees.
  • Union employee benefits are provided through separate collective bargaining agreements

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Respond to BIM and Revit support requests and help troubleshoot common modeling, documentation, and coordination issues
  • Support drafting, engineering, and production teams with Revit and Autodesk Forma workflows
  • Assist with Revit model setup, including templates, views, worksets, linked models, shared coordinates, and model organization
  • Help maintain BIM standards, templates, shared parameters, naming conventions, and workflow documentation
  • Assist with Revit family and content maintenance for precast components such as panels, beams, columns, embeds, and connections
  • Support model coordination by linking architectural, structural, and trade models and helping identify coordination issues
  • Organize project files and support common data environment workflows, including folder structure, file naming, and document control
  • Assist with shop drawing production workflows and model-based deliverables
  • Participate in testing new tools, workflow improvements, software updates, and automation opportunities
  • Learn company BIM standards and help provide basic guidance to users as experience grows

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and eager to support engineering and drafting teams through BIM and Revit-related work. They are comfortable learning new tools and processes, contribute to team collaboration, and take initiative in maintaining model quality and standards. They are motivated to grow their skills in BIM coordination and play a hands-on role in supporting project workflows.

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE

  • 2-year drafting degree that incorporated Revit training/experience
  • 3 years of precast Revit modeling in lieu of a degree
  • Basic experience or exposure to Autodesk Revit (school, internship, training, or personal use)
  • Interest in learning BIM coordination, model setup, content management, and project workflows
  • Familiarity with Revit tools, families, schedules, templates, or model standards is a plus
  • Exposure to BIM or coordination tools (e.g., BIM 360, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud) is helpful
  • Awareness of construction, engineering, architectural, or AEC environments is preferred
  • Ability to learn new software and follow established processes and standards
  • Interest in automation, scripting, or improving workflows (e.g., Dynamo) is a plus
  • Ability to help troubleshoot basic software or workflow issues is beneficial

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Occasional visits to active plant and field locations are required based on operational needs.
  • Ability to wear all required PPE, including but not limited to safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, high visibility vest, hard hat, and other PPE as required while in the plant and field.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and navigate active plant and field environments as needed.
