Position Overview

The Staff Software Engineer drives technical excellence and innovation across our organization. This role combines deep technical expertise with strategic leadership, focusing on architecting scalable solutions while fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.

About the team:

You’ll lead the International HR Systems Integration team, responsible for building scalable data integration and deployment solutions that support global, multi-country HR systems. The team partners cross-functionally with domestic Core HR teams to align and expand product capabilities, with a current focus on AI-driven initiatives such as making the platform multilingual. Operating in 2-week sprints, the team works across a diverse tech stack (C#/.NET, Python, Ruby, AWS) and plays a key role in modernizing and unifying Paylocity’s global product suite.

  • Design and implement modular, well-architected systems that scale efficiently
  • Drive technical strategy and best practices across teams and departments
  • Architect solutions that consider both immediate needs and long-term implications
  • Identify and champion high-impact technical initiatives that drive business value
  • Own and deliver large-scale project features with high reliability and performance
  • Delegate effectively to accelerate project timelines and develop team capabilities
  • Prioritize and manage multiple high-impact projects simultaneously

  • Set and maintain high standards for code quality, performance, and observability
  • Lead code reviews and technical design discussions with constructive feedback

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 8 years of software engineering experience
  • Proven track record of leading significant technical initiatives

Technical Skills:

  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and scalability patterns
  • Strong background in software architecture and system design
  • Experience designing and building data pipelines, integration layers, and ETL tools
  • Experience with performance optimization and observability across multiple systems
  • Expertise in multiple programming languages and technologies
  • Proficiency in C#/.NET
  • Familiarity with Ruby
  • Strong understanding of software development fundamentals (SOLID principles, design patterns, testing strategies)
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and release management processes
  • Experience with database design, optimization, and working with both SQL and NoSQL systems
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex integration issues
  • Experience with API design and consumption patterns

Physical requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods: The role requires sitting at a desk or workstation for long periods, typically 7-8 hours a day.
  • Use of computer and phone systems: The employee must be able to operate a computer, use phone systems, and type. This includes using multiple software programs and inquiries simultaneously.

The pay range for this position is $110,700 - $158,200 /yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This information is provided per the relevant state and local pay transparency laws for the location in which this position will be performed. Base pay information is based on market location.
