JOB TITLE: CHIEF ENGINEER

USUAL TIME OF WORK SHIFT: Variable, 8 – 8+ hours per day, 5 days per week, 40+ hours per week.

BREAKS: Two 10-minute breaks; one 30-minute lunch.

OVERTIME: Variable, as necessary.

MACHINES USED:10-15 Passenger Ford Vans, automatic transmission air conditioned,  Leaf Blower, Pressure Washer, Floor Buffer, Various Handyman Power Tools, (Electric Drills, etc.) Electric Welder, General restaurant equipment and machinery, i.e. soda dispensers, stoves, refrigerators, food processors, deep fryers, steamers, etc.

TOOLS USED: General Hand and Power Tools, Shop Vacuum, Mops, Brooms, kitchen/restaurant utensils, containers, paper goods and related disposables, push brooms, house brooms, mops, mop bucket (rolling), shovel, calculator, clerical items, 30-gal. containers, garden hoses, gardening tools, floor squeegees, and related kitchen/restaurant tools and equipment. Basic plumbing tools, and related handyman maintenance tools.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKPLACE/WORKSTATION:

All work takes place within the parameters of the company’s properties and surrounding parking areas, outdoor sitting areas and inside a well-lit, well-ventilated, fully equipped and air-conditioned hotel and restaurant kitchen work areas, customer serving areas, and within the customer/working areas of the company’s properties. The work area is comprised of a typical large hotel, and all areas have level, (or uneven ground, outdoors) tiled, drainage-equipped floors with anti-fatigue perforated rubber mats at some workstations. The exterior and interior customer service areas vary in size with indoor/outdoor seating areas. The adjacent landscaping and parking lot areas include shrubbery, blacktop, etc. Qualifications: Supervisory experience is required; preferably Handyman experience, bilingual skills and abilities, building, plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance experience is ideal. Clerical activities take place in a typical office, using a desktop computer & related clerical tools and equipment.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB TASKS/PURPOSE:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing the Maintenance Staff’s activities in the daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of all systems involved in the functions of a large typical, modern hotel and related properties, parking lots and related areas. Typical duties include, but are not limited to supervising Maintenance Attendants, operation of floor maintenance equipment; interior and exterior caulking and painting; roof maintenance, electrical repairs; kitchen deep cleaning; carpentry repairs; tile repairs; foliage trimming; mechanical equipment maintenance; as well as related general building maintenance. Other activities include the support of professional service personnel when needed. Helps oversee the opening and closing of the facilities, and all electromechanical operational activities during and after business hours. He/She ensures the smooth operation of all machinery, coordinating duties with Managerial staff and the Facilities Manager. Turns equipment on/off at beginning/ending of shift, cleans all equipment and related hardware, including, but not limited to, stove, refrigeration, food warmers, counters, tools, parts, and equipment. Observes all equipment operation. While performing maintenance, as seasonally required, performs, along with staff, landscape gardening, tree trimming, exterior and interior painting of facility or furnishings, repairs or replaces minor electrical or plumbing components, concurrently resolving any arising issues with equipment, machinery, and general safety issues. Constantly communicates with other staff and general personnel. At day’s end, reviews cleanliness and general maintenance work completion, resolves any pending issues, and finishes shift. At the beginning or end of the shift, may open/close restaurant, ensuring all entrance/exit security, within all job site areas. Performs other duties as required. 

On a typical day the Chief Engineer performs the following duties:

1. Logs in at shift’s start. Reports to previous manager on property for that day’s needs & priorities.

2. Changes into work gear, depending on the first activity: apron, hairnet, anti-slip shoes, disposable plastic gloves or latex gloves, apron, etc.

3. Obtains tools and equipment for the day’s activities. As necessary, turns on equipment and machinery. Determines the day’s priorities with Maintenance Staff and schedules logistics for needed repairs or maintenance.

4. Performs repairs or maintenance of equipment with or without other outside service reps. or other staff.

5. Maintains cleanliness of all restaurant equipment, including kitchen, counter, serving, storage, and preparation areas. Replenishes expendables such as soda machine ingredients, etc. Oversees equipment operation and management, food processor operational activities, concurrently maintaining an adequate flow of ingredients.

6. Depending on seasonal or emergency needs, performs maintenance of lighting, plumbing, painting, or gardening requirements. Resolves any issues or problems with the support of the Maintenance Staff, ensuring general safety, hygiene and cleanliness.

7. Replaces or repairs minor maintenance of lighting, plumbing or general operational equipment.

8. At end of shift, reports completed activities and any pending activities, to General Manager cleans work area and finishes shift. Repeats process as necessary. May perform other duties as assigned. May always be required during emergencies.

  • Strong knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques for complex machinery.
  • Stong knowledge of HVAC, Plumbing, Life Safety, and kitchen equipment
  • Experience in planning and executing maintenance schedules.
  • Proficient in using computerized maintenance management systems such as Quore.
  • Strong Customer Service skills.
  • Ability to work alone and in a team setting.
  • Ability to train subordinates.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues.
