What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Bicycle Mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bicycle Mechanic, you need a solid understanding of bicycle mechanics, maintenance techniques, and repair skills, often gained through vocational training or hands-on experience. Familiarity with specialized tools such as torque wrenches, repair stands, and diagnostic equipment is essential, and certifications from organizations like the Barnett Bicycle Institute can be advantageous. Job description

About Tandem

Tandem is a rapidly growing startup with a unique community-focused approach to micromobility. Like our name implies we want to serve as trusted advisors to our partner cities, collaborating with them to ensure successful bike share and scooter programs. We are teamed up with Movatic, a premium software platform that enables users to rent bikes, scooters, and other assets and allows cities and operators to seamlessly manage their micromobility systems. We are excited to be operating Bike Share in Hillsborough, NJ and believe our offering will make bike share easy and accessible for the community.

The Details

We're looking to hire a professional bicycle mechanic with a passion for bikes, your community, and collaborating with local stakeholders. The DukeFarms program consists of 50 bikes spread throughout 3 station locations. You will perform general maintenance and safety checks on the bikes every two weeks. We will support you to make sure you can do the job efficiently and effectively. We also want you to treat the fleet as your own, with incentives based on performance and growth.

This role's primary responsibility will be to perform maintenance and repairs on Tandem Mobility bicycles every two weeks.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assembly, quality control, and deployment of bicycles as they're built, tuned, and made available for riding.
  • Perform routine maintenance and on-demand repairs on all bikes in the fleet.
  • Perform rebalancing of the fleet to ensure bikes are available at stations.
  • Maintain a sense of ownership over the bikes in the fleet and their condition.
  • Support Tandem Mobility and the local stakeholders in advocating for the program locally.

Requirements

Mechanical:

  • Basic set of bike tools and repair experience, ideally including a mobile repair stand and some space to store and work on bikes indoors, as well as ability to do some repairs on site/outdoors.
  • We are not necessarily looking for a master mechanic with every tool, but we need someone who can do quality, safe, repeatable work, and hold themselves to a high standard.
  • Ability to lift and transport several 40 pound bikes depending on need.
  • Ability to use a smartphone and camera to communicate over phone calls, text, email.

Professional:

  • Ability to keep oneself accountable to a set of goals, and schedule themselves accordingly.
  • Strong communication skills, willingness to communicate status updates and context.
  • Flexibility to work with varying schedules and workloads.
  • Detail focused and good judgement/common sense, able to make some decisions on one's own without full information.
  • Able to think critically about what Tandem HQ might need or want to know about the system, not just answering our questions and responding to our requests.
  • Able to be a professional and friendly public face for Tandem while out and about.

Plenty of Perks!

This is an independent contractor role- we offer premium rates for maintenance per bicycle, as well as incentives based on performance and growth of the program. In addition to a competitive compensation plan, you'll also enjoy....

  • A flexible schedule- you have more control over the time and days you work- it's your business!
  • Opportunities to help shape how we do operations. Your input will allow us to improve and grow, and we hope you will grow with us! We want you to be part of our growth and expansion. With growth comes ample opportunities for you to manage more bikes, oversee multiple programs, transition to other teams in our organization, etc.
