What is a Business Intelligence (BI) professional?

Business Intelligence (BI) professionals are experts who use data analysis, reporting, and visualization tools to help organizations make informed decisions. They gather, process, and interpret large volumes of data to identify trends, patterns, and insights that support strategic planning. BI professionals often work with databases, dashboards, and analytics software to transform raw data into actionable information for business leaders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Business Intelligence (BI) analyst?

To thrive as a Business Intelligence (BI) Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in data modeling, and typically a degree in information systems, computer science, or a related field. Experience with BI tools like Tableau, Power BI, SQL, and data visualization platforms is commonly required, along with knowledge of data warehousing concepts. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication help BI Analysts translate complex data into actionable business insights. These skills are essential for enabling data-driven decision-making and driving organizational growth.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Business Intelligence (BI) roles, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in Business Intelligence often encounter challenges such as integrating data from multiple sources, ensuring data accuracy, and communicating technical findings to non-technical stakeholders. These challenges can be overcome by developing strong data management practices, staying updated with the latest BI tools, and cultivating effective communication skills. Collaborating closely with IT, analysts, and business teams is also key to ensuring data-driven decisions are aligned with organizational goals.

Description

Troon’s Corporate Office, located in Scottsdale, Arizona, is pleased to announce an excellent career opportunity for a BI Developer! We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is eager to learn, contribute, and advance their career within a rapidly growing organization. The ideal candidate will bring a strong commitment to professional development and a desire to succeed in a dynamic corporate environment.

Leads the design, development, and delivery of Power BI reporting solutions and enterprise semantic models to support data‑driven decision‑making. Responsible for end‑to‑end data transformation using Power Query and DAX, building and maintaining reusable semantic models, and enforcing data quality and governance standards across the reporting environment. Serves as a technical lead for BI development while partnering with business stakeholders to ensure reports are accurate, consistent, and fit for purpose.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI reports and dashboards that meet business requirements for accuracy, performance, and usability
  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic models, including table relationships, calculated columns, measures, and row‑level security configurations
  • Develop and manage Power Query data transformation logic to clean, reshape, and integrate data from multiple source systems into consistent, analysis‑ready datasets
  • Partner with data engineering, IT, and business stakeholders to define source‑to‑report data flows and resolve upstream data issues affecting report reliability
  • Define and enforce data quality rules, profiling standards, and validation checks to ensure reports reflect accurate and trustworthy data
  • Establish and document data governance standards for the Power BI environment, including dataset ownership, naming conventions, certification processes, and access controls
  • Monitor and maintain the health of published datasets and reports in the Power BI service, including refresh schedules, gateway configurations, and usage metrics
  • Optimize report and dataset performance through query folding, incremental refresh, aggregations, and efficient DAX patterns
  • Provide guidance and enablement to report consumers on Power BI navigation, filtering, and correct interpretation of metrics
  • Present findings and recommendations to leadership in a clear, concise, and actionable manner

Qualifications:

Experience:

  • 4+ years of experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or a reporting‑focused role
  • Demonstrated experience delivering Power BI reports and semantic models used in production environments
  • Hands‑on experience writing DAX measures and Power Query transformations for complex business reporting requirements

Preferred:

  • Experience working with data warehouses, lakehouses, or cloud data platforms (e.g., Azure Synapse, Fabric, Databricks) as Power BI data sources
  • Experience with Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, or ALM Toolkit for model development and optimization
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or Power BI Premium capacity management

Knowledge and Skills:

Required:

  • Advanced proficiency in DAX for calculated columns, measures, and time‑intelligence functions
  • Strong proficiency in Power Query (M) for data transformation, cleansing, and integration across heterogeneous sources
  • Deep experience with Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and semantic model design (star schema, relationships, hierarchies)
  • Solid understanding of data quality concepts including profiling, validation, lineage, and issue triage across the data pipeline
  • Proficiency in SQL for data extraction, transformation validation, and troubleshooting source data issues
  • Ability to document data models, transformation logic, and governance policies clearly for both technical and non‑technical audiences

Preferred:

  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics, Dataverse, or other Power Platform data sources
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks such as DAMA‑DMBOK or enterprise data catalog tools (e.g., Purview)
  • Experience implementing row‑level security (RLS) and object‑level security (OLS) in Power BI semantic models
  • Knowledge of version control practices for Power BI (e.g., PBIP format with Git integration) and deployment pipeline management
  • Experience with Python or R for data preparation tasks that feed into Power BI datasets

Education Requirements:

Minimum education credentials required for the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Finance, or related field
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

Certificates/Licenses:
