What is a BGA Rework?

A BGA Rework job involves repairing or replacing Ball Grid Array (BGA) components on circuit boards. This process requires specialized equipment to remove defective BGAs, clean the pads, apply solder, and reattach or replace the component while ensuring proper alignment. Technicians performing BGA rework must have expertise in soldering, thermal profiling, and quality inspection to prevent board damage. This role is essential in electronics manufacturing and repair, particularly for high-density, complex PCBs.

What does a BGA Rework do?

In a BGA Rework role, your main tasks typically include diagnosing faulty BGAs, safely removing them from circuit boards, meticulously cleaning pads, and expertly installing new components using specialized rework equipment. You will also frequently inspect the quality of your work under magnification and document repair processes in accordance with company or industry standards. Collaboration with quality control teams and engineers is common to address recurring issues or implement improvements. The work environment is usually cleanroom or electronics lab-based and requires keen focus on detail to avoid introducing new faults.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the BGA Rework position?

To thrive in BGA Rework, you need exceptional soldering precision, strong knowledge of electronics and PCB repair, and experience working with ball grid arrays (BGAs). Proficiency with rework stations, hot air soldering tools, microscopes, and IPC or J-STD-001 certification is highly valued. Attention to detail, patience, and effective problem-solving skills help you excel when addressing complex circuitry issues under tight deadlines. These skills are critical for ensuring high-quality repairs and minimizing defects in the electronics manufacturing process.
