What is a BESS engineer?

A BESS Engineer is a professional who specializes in the design, implementation, and maintenance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). These engineers work on integrating battery storage solutions with renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind, to improve energy reliability and grid stability. Their responsibilities may include system modeling, project management, safety compliance, and performance optimization. BESS Engineers play a crucial role in advancing clean energy technologies and supporting the transition to sustainable power systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS engineer?

To thrive as a BESS Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy storage technologies, and system integration, often supported by an engineering degree and relevant experience. Familiarity with SCADA systems, battery management software, and certifications such as Professional Engineer (PE) or relevant safety credentials is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable design and operation of battery energy storage solutions in the rapidly evolving energy sector.

How does a BESS engineer typically collaborate with project managers and electricians during the deployment of battery energy storage systems?

A BESS Engineer frequently works closely with project managers to ensure that project timelines, budgets, and technical specifications are met throughout the deployment process. They coordinate with electricians and installation teams to oversee system integration, troubleshoot onsite issues, and verify that all electrical connections and safety standards are adhered to. Effective communication and problem-solving skills are essential, as the BESS Engineer often acts as a technical liaison between the design phase and hands-on implementation, ensuring smooth project execution.

What is the difference between Bess Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

Market & Customer Leadership
  • Serve as a senior commercial face of the company within the AI data centre power and stationary BESS market, representing TPS to customers, partners, and industry stakeholders
  • Proactively originate, qualify, and close new customer opportunities through direct engagement and industry relationships
  • Build and maintain deep, long-standing executive-level relationships with key customers and strategic partners

Revenue & Growth Ownership
  • Secure and grow revenue-bearing customer accounts across TPS's BESS systems, power electronics components, DC fast chargers, and software platform
  • Own the full sales lifecycle: account strategy, opportunity development, technical/commercial qualification, proposal leadership, negotiation, and contract close
  • Develop and execute a clear, data-driven sales plan aligned with company revenue and customer growth targets

Strategic Commercial Input
  • Gather market intelligence, customer feedback, and competitive insights to inform product strategy, roadmap priorities, and business model evolution
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Engineering, and the Stationary Business Unit to shape compelling value propositions and differentiated offerings

Lead the development of complex commercial proposals, complex customer sales engagement, pricing strategies, and partnership models
Qualifications, Functional Experience & Skills
Required
  • 10+ years of sales experience within the data center/AIDC, energy infrastructure, or a similar relevant industry, with a strong understanding of complex development and operations ecosystems.
  • Proven senior-level technical sales leadership with a consistent track record of closing complex, high-value deals
  • Established, active industry network within the BESS and energy storage ecosystem
  • Strong working knowledge of both hardware and software components of stationary energy storage systems
  • Demonstrated success negotiating commercial structures, pricing, and contracts for development programs and component sales
  • Experience bringing new technologies to market from a Tier 1 supplier or OEM environment
  • Exceptional executive presence with the ability to influence, persuade, and negotiate at the highest levels
  • Advanced analytical and financial modelling skills (Excel-based minimum) to evaluate novel commercial and partnership structures

Preferred
  • Experience operating in pre-revenue or early-scale environments, shaping market narratives from concept to commercial adoption
  • Expertise with C&I modelling tools such as Energy Toolbase, REopt, and HOMER
  • Strong cross-functional leadership instincts with a hands-on, results-driven approach
