Job Description: BESS Commissioning Manager

Work with one of the world's largest Battery Energy Storage System Developers for our client as their Commissioning Manager. The primary role is to oversee subcontractors and OEMs in the delivery, installation, quality, plant testing, performance testing, ISO/GIA/PPA testing, and startup of Battery Energy Storage Systems and Solar Coupled Power systems. Act as the Owner's representative to oversee aspects of the energy storage system including site work, installation, status reporting, safety, quality control, startup, commissioning, testing, and project closeout. (Note: The Owner will contract a turnkey EPC; this role will oversee the EPC and OEMs on the Owner's behalf.) Employees in this role manage and report on construction turnover, pre-energization, commissioning, and performance testing work performed by contractors and/or vendors at the project site.

Location: US. Travel and stay at project locations for duration of commissioning. Travel up to 75%. Other work is remote, supporting teams in remote SCADA monitoring and commissioning portfolio management.

Preferred Background: Engineering or professional electrical career in power systems commissioning with minimum 100MW-hr or 5 energy storage systems and commissioning experience. Background with BESS is preferred. Experience with SCADA is preferred.

Required Skill Sets:

  • Battery Energy Storage Systems installation and startup
  • Thorough understanding of the technical, performance, and integration of Li-Ion batteries as part of ESS
  • Commissioning process creation
  • Substation testing and startup
  • Protection and Controls implementation and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of containerized systems, skids, controllers/SCADA, transformers, combiners
  • Capable of quality control inspections and punch-list management
  • Thorough understanding of DC systems (0โ€“2,000Vdc) and AC systems (480Vโ€“34.5kV)
  • Ability to troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLC) and industrial electronic equipment (protection relays, inverters, BMS, etc.)
  • Experience with control and SCADA systems and troubleshooting
  • Organization and planning
  • Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, and MS PowerPoint
  • Communication with third parties and executives
  • Understanding of electrical code, means, and methods

Job Responsibilities:

  • Participate in safety programs and audits
  • Perform detailed system quality control inspections for completeness of installation versus install manuals, engineering specifications, and drawings; maintain detailed punch-list
  • Perform system walkdowns for mechanical completion prior to turnover or energization
  • Create and manage energization plans
  • Oversee EPC and OEM commissioning procedures, status, and compliance
  • Assist in troubleshooting commissioning anomalies as the primary SME owner's representative
  • Prepare and review project closeout and testing documents
  • Report daily, weekly, and monthly on progress, indicators, and recovery plans to upper management
  • Interface with project's designated management committees or third parties; act as lead company representative for project activities
  • Manage substation testing with third parties
  • Oversee substation energization
  • Manage metering testing
  • Manage ISO/GIA/PPA commissioning processes
  • Review all Power Purchase Agreements and Interconnect Agreements to develop guidelines for performance testing
  • Interface with Engineering, Commissioning, and Business Management personnel to obtain alignment on testing requirements
  • Develop a complete testing plan for assigned projects to ensure all deliverables across all relevant contractual documentation are met
  • Schedule and lead alignment meetings leading up to and during performance testing periods to ensure all required support parties are aligned and the test is executed in an organized manner
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
  • Assume overall responsibility for test administration, data analysis, and final reporting

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to see color to discern color-coded wiring and/or tape
  • Prolonged periods of standing with intermittent kneeling or bending
  • Must be physically capable of walking on the jobsite on varied, uneven terrain and/or varied temperatures and weather elements
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle for purposes of commuting between working locations
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds at a time
