Bess Application Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BESS Application engineer?

To thrive as a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Application Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, energy storage systems, and system integration, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation tools (like MATLAB/Simulink), SCADA systems, and knowledge of grid standards or certifications such as PMP or PE are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and project management skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable design and implementation of BESS projects in a rapidly evolving energy sector.

What is the difference between Bess Application Engineer vs BESS Project Engineer?

AspectBess Application EngineerBESS Project Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and optimizing BESS applications for clientsManaging BESS project execution from planning to completion
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, knowledge of energy storage systemsEngineering degree, project management experience
Work EnvironmentTechnical, client-facing, R&DFieldwork, project sites, coordination with teams

The Bess Application Engineer primarily focuses on designing and customizing energy storage solutions, while the BESS Project Engineer manages the implementation and execution of BESS projects. Both roles require engineering knowledge, but differ in scope and daily activities, catering to different stages of the BESS lifecycle.

What is a BESS Application engineer?

A BESS Application Engineer is a professional who specializes in the design, implementation, and optimization of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). They work closely with clients to understand energy storage requirements, select suitable technologies, and ensure systems are integrated effectively with renewable energy sources or grid infrastructure. Their role involves technical analysis, system specification, and supporting the deployment and operation of BESS projects. BESS Application Engineers often collaborate with project managers, electrical engineers, and software developers to deliver reliable and efficient energy storage solutions.

What are some common challenges faced by BESS Application engineers when integrating battery energy storage systems with existing power infrastructure?

BESS Application Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless compatibility between new battery storage solutions and legacy grid systems, managing diverse communication protocols, and addressing site-specific installation requirements. They also need to balance project timelines with regulatory compliance, and coordinate closely with utility partners, project managers, and commissioning teams. Successfully overcoming these challenges requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Location: Berkeley, CA
Zip Code: 94702
A Mechanical Engineer, Test Infrastructure job opportunity is open with our client in Berkeley, Ca. In this role you will focus on the mechanical architecture of aux-level and pack-level test stands, ensuring our product development lifecycle is backed by robust, scalable, and representative physical data. To be considered for this role you will have a BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field. 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or test equipment development (battery or energy systems experience is a plus).
Job Duties
* Design and implementation of high-fidelity test beds. In this role, you won't just be building hardware; you"ll be building the "truth machines" that derisk our iron-air battery technology.
* Focus on the mechanical architecture of aux-level and pack-level test stands, ensuring our product development lifecycle is backed by robust, scalable, and representative physical data.
* Design & Development: Lead the mechanical design of complex test beds, from conceptual CAD through to fabrication and assembly. This includes HVAC systems, thermal management systems, hydrogen management systems, electrolyte management systems, and air-handling systems for BESS components.
* System-Level Integration: Create test environments that accurately simulate real-world conditions for our battery packs and auxiliary systems (pumps, manifolds, and power electronics).
* Derisking & Validation: Work closely with the Design Engineering and Test teams to translate high-level testing requirements into functional mechanical hardware that identifies failure modes early in the development cycle.
* Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Electrical, Controls, and Chemical Engineers to integrate sensors, actuators, and DAQ (Data Acquisition) hardware into your mechanical designs.
Knowledge/Skills/Education/Experience
* BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
* 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or test equipment development (battery or energy systems experience is a plus).
* Proficiency with mCAD tools (SolidWorks, NX, etc.)
* Experience working in a Manufacturing Engineering environment, delivering on production-quality tools and designs.
* Strong understanding of safety and compliance considerations in high-power and/or chemical environments.
* Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance speed, rigor, and safety.
* Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
