What is a behavioral economist?

A Behavioral Economist is a professional who studies how psychological, emotional, and social factors impact economic decision-making. Unlike traditional economists who assume people act rationally, behavioral economists examine why individuals sometimes make irrational choices and how these decisions affect markets, policies, and businesses. They use insights from psychology and economics to design experiments, analyze data, and develop strategies that account for real-world human behavior. Their work often informs policy-making, marketing, and financial product design.

What does a behavioral economist do?

A behavioral economist can work in almost every sector and industry. This job combines economics and psychology to create a framework to understand how and when people make errors. In this career, you design, plan, teach, improve, and consult about economic policy for a business. Your responsibilities include analyzing economic data and consumer behavior to create strategies and policies that benefit the business in a financial capacity. Other duties include looking at behavioral insights and reviews to obtain information, making sure that a company’s mission, values, and vision are part of the plan, and helping to define the mandates and activities of the company for attracting consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a behavioral economist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Behavioral Economist, you need a strong background in economics, psychology, and statistics, often supported by an advanced degree in behavioral economics or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as R, Python, or STATA), experimental design, and survey platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, curiosity, and effective communication skills help you interpret complex findings and present actionable insights. These skills and qualities are crucial for understanding human decision-making and influencing policy or business strategies based on behavioral insights.

How does a behavioral economist typically collaborate with other departments to implement research findings?

Behavioral Economists often work closely with marketing, product development, and policy teams to translate research insights into practical strategies. For example, they may design experiments or run pilot programs, then collaborate with data analysts and designers to interpret results and refine interventions. Effective communication skills are essential, as Behavioral Economists must explain complex behavioral concepts in accessible terms to stakeholders from various backgrounds. This cross-functional teamwork is crucial to ensuring that research-driven recommendations are successfully integrated into organizational processes.

This role requires:

  • Previous experience working within deregulated wholesale electricity markets or the utility industry
  • Experience within the energy industry, particularly with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or Market Participant
