Behavioral Designer information

What is a behavioral designer?

Behavioral designers are professionals who apply principles from behavioral science, psychology, and design to create products, services, or environments that positively influence people's decisions and actions. Their work often involves understanding human behavior, identifying obstacles to desired behaviors, and designing interventions or nudges to encourage better choices. They collaborate with teams in fields such as product development, marketing, and policy to ensure that solutions are effective and user-centered.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a behavioral designer?

To thrive as a Behavioral Designer, you need expertise in psychology, behavioral economics, user experience (UX) principles, and often a relevant degree in psychology, design, or a related field. Familiarity with research methods, data analytics platforms, prototyping tools, and frameworks like Fogg Behavior Model or COM-B is important. Strong communication, empathy, and creative problem-solving skills help Behavioral Designers effectively understand user motivations and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for creating interventions and products that effectively drive positive behavior change and meet user needs.

How does a behavioral designer typically collaborate with product teams during the development process?

Behavioral Designers work closely with cross-functional product teams, including UX/UI designers, product managers, and engineers, to integrate behavioral science insights into user experiences. They often facilitate workshops, share research findings, and help translate psychological principles into actionable design solutions. Regular communication and iterative feedback are key, as Behavioral Designers must ensure that interventions are both scientifically sound and aligned with business goals. This collaborative environment encourages creative problem-solving and supports the development of products that effectively drive desired user behaviors.

What is the difference between Behavioral Designer vs Behavior Analyst?

AspectBehavioral DesignerBehavior Analyst
CredentialsTypically requires training in behavioral science, design, or psychology; certifications varyRequires certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) or similar
Work EnvironmentDesigns behavioral interventions in diverse settings like tech, marketing, or public healthWorks primarily in clinical, educational, or therapeutic settings with individuals
Industry UsageUsed in product design, behavior change campaigns, and organizational developmentPrimarily in healthcare, education, and mental health services

While both roles focus on understanding and influencing behavior, Behavioral Designers focus on creating interventions and experiences across various industries, often emphasizing design and innovation. Behavior Analysts typically work directly with individuals in clinical settings, applying evidence-based behavioral techniques. The roles complement each other but differ mainly in scope, environment, and application.

How to become a behavioral designer?

To become a behavioral designer, typically one needs a background in psychology, behavioral science, or related fields, along with skills in research, data analysis, and user experience design. Gaining experience through relevant projects, certifications in behavioral science or design thinking, and familiarity with tools like behavioral mapping or A/B testing can also be beneficial.

Job description

Intelex is seeking an experienced Product Designer to help shape intuitive, effective digital experiences for organizations working to protect people and the environment. In this role, you will design end-to-end workflows for complex web and mobile applications and collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and researchers. You will use customer insights, industry knowledge, and strong interaction design skills to create solutions that are practical, easy to use, and aligned to real user goals.

We are looking for a designer who is comfortable working in a dynamic, collaborative environment and who can translate research, product insights, customer usage data, and configuration patterns into clear, thoughtful design outcomes. They are comfortable using quantitative signals to uncover opportunities, inform design decisions, and generate hypotheses that can be explored and validated through the design process. This person values learning over perfection in the early stages of design, uses rapid experimentation to reduce risk and validate assumptions, and leverages AI as a natural part of their design workflow. They are equally comfortable contributing to individual product experiences and strengthening the systems, patterns, and design foundations that support them.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DELIVERABLES

  • Apply user-centered design principles, customer insights, and product usage data to understand problems, form hypotheses, and guide product direction

  • Translate user goals and real-world scenarios into clear workflows and interface designs

  • Design scalable solutions that consider the broader product ecosystem, shared components, and system dependencies

  • Conduct or support user research, synthesize findings, and ensure they inform design decisions

  • Create and iterate on user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs for web and mobile, using low-fidelity exploration and rapid experimentation to validate ideas before investing in detailed design

  • Validate concepts and designs through testing, experimentation, and analysis of user behavior, incorporating feedback and evidence into iterative improvements

  • Partner closely with Product Management and Engineering throughout discovery, design, delivery, and iteration to ensure solutions align with user needs, business goals, and technical constraints

  • Ensure designs follow accessibility best practices and support a wide range of user needs

  • Contribute to, evolve, and apply a consistent design system, ensuring solutions align with established patterns while identifying opportunities to improve system scalability and usability

  • Integrate AI-assisted design, research, synthesis, and prototyping tools into day-to-day workflows to accelerate exploration, uncover insights, and improve design effectiveness

  • Communicate design rationale effectively through presentations, storytelling, and facilitation

  • Actively contribute to evolving team workflows, tooling, and AI-assisted processes, treating how we work as something we continuously improve alongside what we design.

  • Collaborate with Product Experience Validation and squad teams within a risk-based review framework, treating validation as a design input rather than a final gate

QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS & WORK TRAITS

  • Passionate about designing products that solve real user problems

  • Comfortable working independently within a cross-functional team

  • Strong understanding of interaction design, visual hierarchy, layout, and information architecture

  • Able to design for complex systems or multi-step workflows

  • Demonstrates a strong systems mindset and can work effectively within established patterns, design systems, and shared components while contributing improvements where needed

  • Naturally gravitates toward rapid exploration, experimentation, and learning, using low-fidelity approaches to test assumptions before refining solutions

  • Uses evidence from research, customer feedback, product usage patterns, and experimentation to inform design decisions

  • Regularly incorporates AI tools into design workflows to improve research, ideation, synthesis, prototyping, and productivity

  • Proficient in Figma and able to create clear design documentation

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Open to feedback and able to provide constructive critique

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
REQUIRED
Proficient with Figma
Familiarity with collaboration tools such as Jira or Miro
Experience working with a component-based design system
Familiarity with product analytics, behavioral data, or usage-tracking tools and the ability to use customer behavior data to inform design decisions and hypotheses

PREFERRED
Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or modern front-end frameworks (understanding only; implementation not required)

EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED
2-5 years of experience in Product Design, User Experience Design, or a related role

Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design, workflow design, research-informed decision making, interaction design, and visual design skills. Portfolio should also show evidence of iterative problem solving, experimentation, and how insights or data influenced design outcomes.

Strong understanding of design processes, from research to prototyping to testing

Demonstrated use of AI-assisted tools as a regular part of the design process, including research, ideation, synthesis, prototyping, or design execution

PREFERRED
Experience designing for business software or other complex applications
Experience working in agile or iterative development environments, with familiarity with custom configuration data, implementation workflows, or enterprise SaaS products.

Experience using product analytics, customer behavior data, or experimentation results to identify opportunities, form design hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes

EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree, diploma, or post-secondary training in Product Design, User Experience, or a related field preferred
