Job description

Job Summary Under close supervision of the Zone Battalion Chief, responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents providing fire support services as required. Operates fire support and water tender vehicles; operates water tender pumps; sets up portable tanks; and supplies water to fire apparatus. Provides additional water supply to suppress fires of all types including structure, wildland, and vehicle fires.

When at the scene of an emergency, works under the direction of the Incident Commander or designee. This position is a non-firefighter support position and is not authorized to engage in fire suppression operations. Education and Experience Requirements High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Previous CDL experience desirable but not required. Valid New Mexico Driver's License, class appropriate for the vehicle being driven, required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment Preferred Training: Water Tender Operator Academy training including: Emergency Apparatus Driving Radio Use Drafting Operations Traffic Control Operations Portable Tanks, Hose, Equipment and Appliances Fill Site Operations Dump Site Operations Relay Pumping Operations First Aid and CPR Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements Successful completion of standard pre-employment drug screen, duty applicable physical, and physical ability test required.

Work is performed outdoors in varied weather conditions and requires physical exertion under vigorous and unusual conditions. May be subject to cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns, broken bones, insect and animal bites, germs, bacteria, viruses, environmental allergies, gases, and fumes. May be subject to life-threatening situations and exposure to high stress levels.

May be subject to repetitive motion, exposure to CRTs and VDTs, and extended periods of standing or physical activity. May be required to bend, stoop, crawl, climb, balance, kneel, reach, lift, carry, push, pull and drag heavy items over rough or uneven terrain. May work in cramped spaces, on ladders, stairs, and around machinery, chemicals, and hazardous conditions.

Must be able to lift in excess of seventy-five (75) pounds. Utilize, process, and navigate the designated reporting system as necessary and appropriate based on the needs and requirements of this position. Essential Job Functions The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks. Safely responds to and returns from emergency incidents. Operates fire support and water tender vehicles in accordance with department policies and applicable traffic laws.

Operates fire pumps on various fire apparatus and water tender units. Fills water tenders and supplies water to fire apparatus during emergency operations. Sets up portable tanks, dump sites, fill sites, and relay pumping operations.

Drags hose lines from water tenders to fire engines and assists with hose deployment operations. Cleans, replaces, stores, and maintains fire hoses and related equipment. Maintains and monitors assigned vehicles, pumps, tools, and support equipment.

Inspects water tender vehicles to ensure operational readiness and maintenance compliance. Operates mobile radios and maintains effective communications during emergency and non-emergency operations. May assist with traffic control and general incident scene support activities.

Provides additional water supply support to assist in suppressing fires and supporting emergency operations. Maintains records and reports related to assigned duties and equipment operations. Maintains a safe and healthy workplace in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
