Job description

The equipment operator is responsible for operating heavy machinery and equipment used in construction, demolition, transportation, or other industrial settings. Their duties vary depending on the type of equipment and industry but generally include the following:Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Operate machines like bulldozers, backhoes, excavators, rollers, forklifts, loaders, graders, and other specialized equipment used for digging, installing utilities, moving material, compacting, grading, etc.
  • Inspect equipment before use to ensure it's in good working condition, including checking fluid levels, tires, and overall mechanical condition.
  • Perform routine maintenance like cleaning, greasing, and basic repairs.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ensure that the work area is safe, well-marked, and free of hazards.
  • Adhere to regulations and guidelines for safe equipment operation.
  • Prepare job sites by clearing, demolition, hauling debris and/ or leveling ground.
  • Follow project plans and blueprints to execute tasks accurately.
  • Load and unload trucks and other vehicles as needed.
  • Clean and maintain equipment after use.
  • Identify and troubleshoot issues with equipment, performing basic repairs or maintenance.
  • Follow project timelines and work efficiently to ensure tasks are completed on schedule.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of heavy machinery operation and capabilities.
  • Ability to read building plans related to structural concrete and land grades.
  • Excellent mechanical skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Vocational school training or apprenticeship preferred.
  • On-the-job training offered.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
  • Able to work long periods including evenings and weekends when necessary.
  • Must be able to operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at a time.
