Job description

Shipping & Fulfillment Associate — E-Commerce

Goodwill NYNJ
South Hackensack, NJ | Full-Time

Position Overview

The Shipping & Fulfillment Associate plays a critical role in ensuring that every item sold across our e-commerce platforms—ShopGoodwill, eBay, and emerging marketplaces—is delivered accurately, safely, and on time. As the final checkpoint before orders reach our customers, this role directly impacts customer satisfaction, seller ratings, and overall business performance.

This is a fast-paced, physically active position within a warehouse production environment. Success in this role requires a balance of speed, precision, and sound judgment—particularly when selecting packaging methods that protect items while managing shipping costs efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Shipping & Order Fulfillment

  • Accurately pick, verify, and pack orders across all e-commerce platforms
  • Process shipments using shipping software and carrier systems (e.g., USPS, UPS, FedEx), including label generation and service selection
  • Ensure timely shipment in alignment with platform handling time requirements and daily production goals
  • Stage completed orders for carrier pickup and maintain organized outbound shipping areas
  • Perform final order verification to ensure correct item, recipient, and shipping details prior to shipment

Packaging & Cost Optimization

  • Select appropriate packaging materials and box sizes to protect items while minimizing dimensional weight charges
  • Apply proper packing techniques based on item type, fragility, size, and value
  • Reduce shipping costs by optimizing packaging and avoiding unnecessary bulk or filler
  • Ensure compliance with carrier packaging standards, especially for insured, fragile, or high-value items
  • Proactively communicate packaging supply needs to maintain operational efficiency
  • Minimize damage-related returns through careful handling and attention to detail

Quality Assurance & Accuracy

  • Conduct final condition checks to confirm item matches listing details before shipment
  • Identify and escalate discrepancies, damages, or missing items prior to fulfillment
  • Maintain organized staging areas to support accurate inventory and order flow
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams (e.g., production, customer service)
  • Report trends in shipping errors or damage issues to support continuous improvement

Warehouse Operations

  • Perform all tasks in a warehouse setting, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting throughout the shift
  • Safely lift and move packages up to 50 lbs, with team assistance for heavier items
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused workspace at all times
  • Support team operations during peak periods and participate in cross-training as needed

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience in shipping, fulfillment, or warehouse operations
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, production-driven environment
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Dependable, accountable, and team-oriented mindset

Preferred

  • Experience with e-commerce fulfillment (ShopGoodwill, eBay, Poshmark, etc.)
  • Familiarity with shipping platforms such as ShipStation, Shippo, Pirate Ship, or USPS Click-N-Ship
  • Understanding of dimensional weight pricing and cost optimization strategies
  • Experience packaging fragile, irregular, or high-value items
  • Knowledge of major carriers (USPS, UPS, FedEx) and service-level selection
  • Experience handling shipping claims or damage disputes
  • Forklift certification or experience with warehouse equipment

Performance Expectations

This role is performance-driven, with clear and measurable standards, including:

  • 100% order accuracy (correct item, address, and packaging)
  • On-time shipment meeting same-day or next-day handling targets
  • Minimal to zero damage-related returns
  • Cost-effective shipping decisions (right packaging, carrier, and service level)
  • Consistent daily throughput aligned with operational goals

Why This Role Matters

Shipping is where the transaction becomes the customer experience. The quality, speed, and care applied during fulfillment directly influence customer satisfaction, repeat business, and organizational reputation. This role is essential to maintaining the trust of our customers and supporting the mission that our work helps fund.
