Project Overview:

The Project is a greenfield mining, process, material handling and ship loading project with a focus on sustaining production, minimise environmental impacts, strengthen long-term relationships with neighbouring communities and foster local economic development.

Job Summary:

In this role, you will provide project field engineering specialization and expertise with work planning and packaging, material management, quantity verification and validation, safety and quality control, technical inspection and testing knowledge, and subcontract coordination. Your recommendations will ensure field engineering activities operate safely, are complete, and conform to quality standards and project requirements.

This position will initially (6months) be a Brisbane based position then will move to a 2 & 1 rotation in Weipa when site execution commences. 

Major Responsibilities:

Leadership/Supervision 

  • Proactively engages with their teams’ development through CPM, competency development/assessment and feedback  
  • Develops and recommends the construction engineering staffing plan for approval by the Site Manager (or appropriate level of Project Management) and prepares employee requisitions. 
  • Directs construction engineering activities of the assigned construction engineering staff, ensuring compliance with procedures.    
  • Reviews and provides input to the project staffing plan for construction engineers and associated personnel.
  • Maintains an effective relation with other functional departments, client, and stakeholders.
  • Ensures the implementation of the project construction procedures and Bechtel Standard Work Porcess Procedures (SWPP), coordinates any deviations from these procedures.
  • Reviews and provides input to project controls documents on progress relating to cost and schedule.

Technical

  • Coordinates with home engineering & construction on constructability and design issues
  • Coordinates development and submission of any technical plans required for regulatory permit approvals.  
  • Work Planning & Packaging 
  • Champion of the Bechtel Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) process 
  • Directs the design of temporary construction facilities as required.  
  • Coordinates and monitors the interfacing between the construction automation plan and the project controls program at the jobsite.
  • Coordinates with the superintendents and subcontractors to plan construction schedules.

Material Management   

  • Directs preparation of requisitions for field procured materials, material substitution, services, equipment. 

Quantities 

  • Possesses responsibility for quantity take-off, control, reporting and forecasting.   

Safety / Quality Control 

  • Ensures zero accident philosophy and requirements are implemented and adhered to by craft and others when in the operational area, and tools and equipment are in safe condition and operated safely. 
  • Lead surveillances and quality assurance and audits.
  • Leads and supports commissioning and turnover efforts, including documentation reviews, in field monitoring, generating system punch lists and compiling turnover dossiers.    

Subcontract Coordinator  

  • Reviews and approves inspection test plans  
  • Coordinates reviews of subcontractor submittals  
  • Coordinates subcontract activities to ensure materials, equipment and quality comply with design plans and specifications.
Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) and 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Key site leader, managing the field engineering team responsible for all technical aspects on the site. 
  • Manages and aligns the efforts of various discipline field engineers, ensuring consistency in technical standards and seamless integration across the project
  • Reviews and clarifies engineering drawings, specifications, and project documentation, assisting the field teams in understanding design intent and resolving technical questions during construction.
  • Implements rigorous QA/QC protocols, verifying that materials, installations, and on-site conditions meet design requirements, applicable codes, and project-specific standards. Identifies and investigates field engineering challenges—such as design conflicts or unforeseen conditions—and coordinates with design teams, subcontractors, and superintendents to develop timely solutions.
  • Maintains accurate records of field changes, test results, and non-conformances.
  • Communicates updates promptly to relevant stakeholders, ensuring project documentation remains current and consistent.
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Engages with project management, superintendents, and discipline teams to enhance processes, share lessons learned, and foster an environment that promotes high-quality engineering and construction practices.
