Arnold & Porter is seeking a Business Development Manager to support the continued growth of its Life Sciences & Healthcare Regulatory and Product Liability Litigation practices. This role may be located in our Boston, New York, or Washington, DC office.

The Business Development Manager serves as a strategic partner to practice leaders and attorneys, driving initiatives that enhance client relationships, expand market presence, and generate new business. Working closely with lawyers and the Marketing Department, the Business Development Manager will translate market insights into targeted, high-impact strategies that support both practiceโ€‘level and firmwide priorities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Advisory & Practice Support
  • Partner with practice chairs and working group leaders to develop and execute business development strategies
  • Identify market trends, client opportunities, and competitive positioning to inform growth initiatives
  • Drive crossโ€‘selling and collaboration opportunities across practices
Pitches, Proposals & Client Engagement
  • Lead the development of highโ€‘impact pitches, proposals, and RFP responses
  • Shape compelling messaging and value propositions aligned with client needs and firm strengths
  • Prepare and coach partners and senior attorneys for client meetings and presentations
Market Positioning & Profile Raising
  • Collaborate with BD and Marketing colleagues to execute strategic initiatives leveraging market intelligence and client insights
  • Lead directory and award submissions (e.g., Chambers) to enhance market visibility
  • Identify and support media, PR, and thought leadership opportunities
  • Drive participation in sponsorships, conferences, and speaking engagements
Events, Campaigns & Content
  • Oversee development of marketing collateral and digital content in collaboration with Marketing Communications
  • Coordinate client events, webinars, and targeted campaigns aligned with strategic priorities
Data, Reporting & Financial Management
  • Develop and manage practice budgets; track and evaluate ROI on BD initiatives
  • Utilize CRM and other tools to track activity, support client targeting, and inform decisionโ€‘making
Lateral Integration
  • Support integration of lateral partners through targeted client development planning and coordinated BD efforts
Team Leadership
  • Supervise and mentor junior BD team members
  • Provide guidance on pitches, proposals, directory submissions, and marketing materials
  • Contribute to a collaborative, highโ€‘performing team environment
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree required; advanced degree a plus
  • Minimum of 6+ years of business development or marketing experience, preferably within a law firm or professional services environment
  • Experience supporting life sciences and healthcare practices strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of business development strategy within a professional services context
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and multiple priorities in a fastโ€‘paced environment
  • Strong project management, analytical, and problemโ€‘solving skills
  • Strong client service orientation and ability to build credibility with senior stakeholders
  • Experience with CRM systems, experience management tools (e.g., Foundation), and AIโ€‘enabled tools preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience
  • Ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously

The anticipated base salary for this position is $128,000 to $180,000. The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job.
