Job description

Battery Quality Engineer

Forge Nano Inc., a rapidly growing advanced materials company specializing in nano‑scale coatings across diverse markets, is seeking a highly experienced Battery Quality Engineer to support incoming material quality control and quality testing functions primarily for the Battery Prototype Line. This role involves overseeing the material lifecycle, including receiving and verifying incoming shipments, conducting analytical testing to ensure materials meet quality standards, and providing in‑process quality control testing through all stages of production to final product release. The ideal candidate is skilled in hands‑on laboratory work, capable of independently generating reliable data, and has a solid understanding of electrochemistry and safety principles relevant to the testing process. The Battery Quality Engineer will report to the QMS Manager.

Key Responsibilities (not an exhaustive list of responsibilities)
  • Receive and log incoming raw materials per Shipping & Receiving and Procurement procedures
  • Qualify Incoming Material & Supplier Quality
    • Perform incoming inspection (IQC) and sampling of raw materials and components according to approved inspection plans and acceptance criteria/spec.
    • Review and trend supplier Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and material performance data.
    • Support supplier quality investigations and material disposition decisions.
    • Assist with supplier corrective action requests (SCARs) for material‑related quality issues.
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC):
    • Collect and analyze critical‑to‑quality process parameter, perform process capability studies (Cp/Cpk) and control charts
    • Analyze and trend incoming material, in‑process, and final product quality data to identify process variation, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in root cause investigations using structured problem‑solving methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D, etc.).
  • Metrology and Measurement System:
    • Perform and support measurement system evaluations, including Gauge R&R studies.
    • Maintain inspection methods, work instructions, and measurement equipment qualification records.
    • Verify calibration status of inspection and test equipment prior to use.
  • Verify shipments against PO, COA, and DOT/IATA/49 CFR §173.185 documentation; hold nonconforming or undocumented shipments
  • Execute hands‑on experiments to qualify materials against specification prior to release for build
  • Support in‑process QC checks during Prototype Line production (thickness, viscosity, coating/burr verifications)
  • Perform QC checks on products (visual, weight, dimensional) and support final product release
  • Record results accurately and maintain traceability from material lot to finished cell
  • Flag out‑of‑spec results, quarantine nonconforming products, and support corrective action processes
  • Support ISO 9001 compliance
  • Coordinate and support equipment calibration activities, including performing internal calibration tracking and arranging external calibration serves as needed.
  • Work cross functionally with the battery prototype line, the quality control group and the battery R&D groups.
  • Safety and Dry Room Compliance:
    • Follow and promote safe handling practices for hazardous chemicals, powders, solvents, and lithium‑ion battery materials.
    • Monitor and verify environmental conditions such as dry‑room dew point, temperature, and humidity where applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • B.S. in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field (or equivalent hands‑on lab experience)
  • Demonstrated hands‑on laboratory experience generating reliable, reproducible data
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of electrochemistry fundamentals and lithium‑ion battery safety practices
  • Familiarity with viscosity, % solids, particle sizing, or other materials characterization techniques
  • Exposure to ISO 9001:2015 quality management systems
Work Environment
