How much do battery recycling jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for battery recycling in the United States is $21.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.87 and $21.15 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can I make money recycling batteries?

Battery recycling jobs often involve collecting, sorting, and processing used batteries, and some positions may offer compensation based on the amount of batteries handled or recycled. While individuals can sometimes earn money by collecting batteries for recycling programs, most professional roles in battery recycling are paid employment rather than direct profit from recycling. Certifications in hazardous materials handling and safety are often required for these jobs.

What are the common safety challenges faced in battery recycling and how are they managed?

Battery recycling professionals often encounter hazards such as chemical exposure, risk of fire, and handling heavy or damaged batteries. To address these challenges, facilities implement strict safety protocols, provide specialized training, and require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, goggles, and respirators. Workers typically follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regularly participate in safety drills to stay prepared. By adhering to these practices and collaborating closely with safety teams, employees help maintain a secure work environment and prevent accidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Battery Recycling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Battery Recycling, you need knowledge of hazardous materials handling, safety protocols, and relevant environmental regulations, often supported by a high school diploma or technical training. Familiarity with equipment such as battery dismantling machines, personal protective equipment (PPE), and tracking systems for waste management is vital. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and a commitment to safety are standout soft skills for this field. These abilities ensure efficient, compliant battery recycling operations while minimizing environmental and health risks.

How profitable is battery recycling?

Battery recycling can be profitable depending on the scale, technology used, and market demand for recovered materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Jobs in this field often require knowledge of chemical processes and safety protocols, and profitability is influenced by operational efficiency and commodity prices.

Can I make money from old batteries?

Battery recycling jobs involve collecting, sorting, and processing used batteries, which can generate income through scrap metal sales or recycling programs. The amount of money earned depends on battery type, weight, and current market prices, and workers often need safety training and proper handling skills. While some individuals or companies profit from recycling batteries, it is not typically a primary source of income for most workers.

How much do they pay for battery recycling?

Pay for battery recycling jobs varies depending on location, experience, and the type of batteries handled. Typically, recyclers or technicians earn between $12 and $20 per hour, with some positions offering bonuses or incentives for efficiency and safety compliance.

What is a Battery Recycling job?

A Battery Recycling job involves collecting, sorting, and processing used batteries to recover valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and lead. Workers in this field follow safety protocols to handle hazardous substances and ensure eco-friendly disposal. Responsibilities may include dismantling batteries, operating recycling machinery, and maintaining compliance with environmental regulations. The goal is to reduce waste, prevent pollution, and conserve valuable resources.

Job description

American Battery Technology Company (ABTC) provides technical development and commercialization of domestic, sustainable sourcing of critical battery materials through lithium-ion battery recycling and battery metal extraction technologies for use in batteries that power electric cars, grid storage applications, and consumer electronics and tools. Our first of kind systems produce commercial-scale battery materials that are sold into the battery manufacturing supply chain.

As the Structural Engineering Lead at our company, you will be responsible for creating infrastructure designs for our proprietary lithium-ion battery recycling processes and primary resource extraction technologies. This role will involve collaborating with our internal engineering team, technical programs, construction, and plant operations, as well as various external and internal experts, to ensure the effective design, construction, and operation of our facilities. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic about creating and implementing efficient concrete, steel, and site infrastructure in a dynamic and high-performance environment. The ideal candidate will be a skilled problem-solver, responsible for producing design deliverables and serving as the owner's engineer for third-party design projects. This includes assessing both greenfield and brownfield projects.

Requirements

  • Lead the end-to-end structural design for "first of kind" battery recycling and primary metal manufacturing facilities. Evaluate, determine and design the most efficient structural systems (e.g., pre-engineered metal buildings, reinforced concrete, or heavy structural steel) based on factory requirements and local site conditions.
  • Collaborate directly with Chemical, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to integrate complex industrial systems into cohesive site plans via review of equipment submittals or generalized performance expectations.
  • Manage the structural scope from initial feasibility studies and schematic design to construction administration and final close-out.
  • Perform calculations around seismic, weather, and geotechnical factors to ensure safe and lasting infrastructure designs.
  • Draft and develop standards to support reliable adherence to code and company standards.
  • Support prototyping and piloting system designs by providing technical feedback and continuous improvement ideas through rapid fabrication and modification.
Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Background in Civil & Structural Engineering
  • Nevada Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
  • 5+ years of engineering/design experience
  • Thorough understanding of International Building Code (IBC) 2024 with ability to interpret ASCE / SEI and ACI codes
  • Knowledge of Autodesk CAD programs (Civil3D, Revit)
  • Ability to interpret design drawings such as equipment General Arrangements (GA)
  • Ability to positively collaborate in a fast-paced team environment and follow company values
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical information to executives, managers, and peers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nevada Licensed Structural Professional Engineer (SE) and thorough understanding of applicable codes.
  • Chemical or Mechanical industry background (High Volume Manufacturing, Gas & Chemicals, Metals & Mining, Mineral Processing, etc.)
  • Ability to interpret design drawings such as Process Flow Diagrams (PFD), and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
  • Experience interfacing with Solidworks and / or Fabrication-level detailed designs
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Experience in technical bid evaluations, material takeoffs, and civil / structural project cost estimating
  • Experience managing staff augmentation resources to complete a project

Benefits

  • Competitive salary
  • Company-sponsored health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Parental Leave
  • Company-sponsored Employee Assistance Program
  • Stock options
  • 401(K)
  • Flexible paid time off
Expected Pay Range

$115k - $175k per year.

Compensation for this position may vary based on a number of individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
