Battery Modeling information

What is battery modeling?

A Battery Modeling job involves developing and utilizing mathematical models to simulate the behavior, performance, and degradation of batteries. Engineers in this role create models to predict battery life, efficiency, and thermal characteristics, aiding in design optimization and system integration. They work with tools like MATLAB, Simulink, and machine learning techniques to simulate real-world conditions. Battery modelers collaborate with researchers and engineers to improve battery technology for applications in electric vehicles, renewable energy storage, and consumer electronics. The role requires expertise in electrochemistry, physics-based modeling, and data analysis.

What does someone in battery modeling do?

Professionals in Battery Modeling spend their days designing and simulating battery systems, analyzing test data, and refining computational models to predict battery performance and lifespan. They often collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware engineers, chemists, and product designers to ensure models align with experimental results and real-world application needs. Regular responsibilities may also include preparing technical reports, staying updated on advances in battery technology, and supporting validation testing. This dynamic role offers a blend of independent analytical work and teamwork to drive impactful results in battery development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for battery modeling?

To thrive in Battery Modeling, you need a strong background in electrochemistry, applied mathematics, physics, or engineering, often supported by an advanced degree in these fields. Proficiency in simulation tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL Multiphysics, or Python, and familiarity with battery management systems and modeling software are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration skills help set candidates apart. These capabilities are crucial for developing accurate battery models, driving innovation, and working effectively within multidisciplinary research or engineering teams.

Who are we looking for?
GHD North America is recruiting a Lead - Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to spearhead storage growth in the U.S. and Canada.
You bring deep technical command of utility-scale standalone and hybrid (wind/solar + BESS) assets and thrive as a seller-doer. You will coordinate execution with Wind and Transmission and Distribution leads, and engage in a variety of delivery models on behalf of clients.
Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of duties and will see you involved in:
  • Own the regional BESS strategy and go-to-market; prioritize roles as Owner's Engineer, Independent Engineer and technical due diligence across development and financing stages.
  • Lead programs spanning screening/feasibility, techno-economic sizing and optimization of microgrids/hybrids involving battery systems and interface with interconnection and power system studies
  • Build client relationships with developers, utilities/ISOs, IPPs and financiers; shape capture plans and proposals with Relationship Managers and Pursuit Leaders.
  • Develop and mentor a cross-regional team; implement standardized tools/playbooks and leverage GHD Global Collaboration Centres to scale design and studies.

What you bring to the team:
  • 10-15 years in power systems or energy infrastructure, with at least 5+ years in utility-scale BESS or hybrid renewables + storage projects.
Proven experience in Owner's/Independent Engineer roles, interconnection studies, and EMS/SCADA integration. Familiarity with Li-ion BESS safety and fire protection standards (e.g., NFPA 855) required.
  • Demonstrable pipeline development and capture performance in high-growth storage markets; fluency in hybrid dispatch and ancillary services value-stacks.

The successful candidate will also have to meet the following requirements:
  • B.Eng./B.Sc. (electrical preferred) with P.Eng./PE (or eligibility); strong knowledge of grid codes and interconnection standards.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams across geographies; excellent communication, proposal leadership and client stewardship.

What we expect from you:
  • Deliver high-quality advisory and engineering outputs across the BESS lifecycle; embed safety, quality and risk management in all aspects of delivery.
  • Travel regionally to priority cities, client hubs and project sites; actively mentor and grow the team's capability and market reputation.

Please include a cover letter with your application that specifically outlines your experience working on BESS projects, along with examples of relevant professional relationships you have developed within clients.
Our Hybrid Work Model: Be part of the dynamic culture! Our workplace thrives on a hybrid model, combining in-office collaboration and flexibility. Join us in the office three days a week to contribute, connect and excel in our vibrant environment.
