What is the difference between Battery Modeling Engineer vs Battery Test Engineer?

AspectBattery Modeling EngineerBattery Test Engineer
CredentialsDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; knowledge of modeling softwareDegree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering; experience with testing equipment
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, simulation environments, R&D departmentsTesting labs, quality assurance, product validation
Industry UsageBattery development, simulation, and optimizationProduct testing, validation, and quality control
Search/Comparison IntentFocus on modeling and simulation skillsFocus on testing procedures and validation processes

The main difference between a Battery Modeling Engineer and a Battery Test Engineer lies in their focus areas. The Battery Modeling Engineer specializes in creating simulations and models to predict battery performance, while the Battery Test Engineer conducts physical tests to validate battery quality and safety. Both roles are essential in battery development but serve different stages of the product lifecycle.

What is a battery modeling engineer?

Battery Modeling Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and optimize mathematical models that simulate the behavior and performance of batteries. They use these models to predict battery life, efficiency, safety, and performance under various conditions, helping to improve battery technology for applications like electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage. Their work often involves collaborating with chemists, electrical engineers, and software developers to create accurate simulations and guide the development of new battery technologies.

How does a battery modeling engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams in the development process?

Battery Modeling Engineers frequently work alongside electrochemists, hardware engineers, and data scientists to develop and refine battery systems. They translate experimental data and design requirements into simulation models, ensuring alignment between theoretical predictions and real-world performance. Effective communication and regular meetings are essential, as Battery Modeling Engineers often provide critical insights that inform design decisions, troubleshooting, and optimization of battery performance. This collaborative environment fosters innovation and helps accelerate product development cycles.

Job description

About Electrified Thermal Solutions
ย
Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. But historically reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.ย

Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.ย ย
ย
To do this, we are building the Joule Hive thermal battery: an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.ย

As an Electrical Engineer, you will join our engineering team and play a pivotal role in scaling up our Joule Hive Thermal Battery. This job offers a unique opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project that will shape the future of renewable energy technology. You will lead field activities related to electrical system installation and commissioning. You will report to the Lead Electrical Engineer.
Travel:ย ย 50% (to support on-site installation and commissioning for projects)ย
What You'll Do
  • Assistย in the design of electricalย power and control systems of the Joule Hive thermal battery.ย

  • Developย andย maintainย electrical circuit models ofย the thermal battery electricalย system.ย

  • Development of a comprehensive Computer-Aided Design (CAD) framework for theย commercialย system, including development of modelsย that encapsulate the system's architecture, components, and subsystems.ย

  • Ensure seamless coordination among various components and subsystems through the CAD frameworkย and collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate andย optimizeย various subsystems, components, and processes within theย thermal batteryย system.ย

  • Maintain detailed documentation throughout theย projectย suchย design specifications, CAD models, simulation results, and test reports.ย

  • Provide progress updates and technical reports to project stakeholders, highlighting key achievements, challenges, and mitigation strategies.ย

  • Support functional testingย of electrical equipment, instrumentation, PLC I/O, and control systems.ย

  • Perform electrical troubleshooting during and after project installation,ย commissioningย and integration.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor'sย or Master'sย degree in electrical engineering.ย

  • 1-3 years of professional engineering experience (co-op experience will be considered).ย

  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentalsย including:ย

  • Circuit analysisย

  • Three-phase power systemsย

  • Electrical machinesย

  • Power distributionย

  • Control systemsย
