What is a battery engineer?

Battery Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test batteries for various applications, such as electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and renewable energy storage. Working remotely, they use advanced software and digital collaboration tools to create and improve battery systems while communicating with teams across different locations. Their work focuses on enhancing battery performance, safety, and lifespan, often requiring knowledge in electrochemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering.

What are the typical collaboration dynamics for a remote battery engineer working with cross-functional teams?

As a remote Battery Engineer, you’ll regularly collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including electrical engineers, product designers, and project managers. Communication typically takes place via video meetings, collaborative project management tools, and shared documentation platforms. You may be responsible for providing technical assessments, sharing test results, and integrating feedback from both engineering and non-engineering colleagues. Building strong virtual communication skills and proactively sharing updates are key to ensuring project alignment and timely product development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote battery engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Battery Engineer (Remote), you need a solid background in electrochemistry, materials science, and battery system design, usually supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with battery modeling software, lab instrumentation, and safety standards such as ISO 26262 or UL 2580 is typically required. Strong problem-solving, effective remote communication, and project management skills help individuals excel in collaborative and independent work environments. These competencies are crucial for developing innovative battery solutions, ensuring safety, and delivering projects efficiently while working remotely.

Job description

Work arrangement: Remote / U.S.-based; job-board anchor: Houston, TX 77002
Opportunity: Contingent specialist role supporting Axyde's proposal for USTDA 1131PL26R0056
Mobilization: Potential Regional Asia travel within 20 calendar days after Axyde's written notice following award

Role purpose

Determine whether a battery-storage concept is correctly sized, safely deployable and economically supportable for its actual grid and commercial use cases.

Representative problems this role must solve
  • A sponsor specifies MW/MWh before defining dispatch use cases, degradation, augmentation, duty cycle, interconnection or revenue logic.
  • Safety, siting, thermal-runaway, fire response, transport, warranty and end-of-life assumptions are incomplete.
  • The storage benefit depends on optimistic tariff, arbitrage, ancillary-service or avoided-upgrade assumptions.
Responsibilities
  • Define use cases, duty cycles, power/energy sizing, degradation, availability, augmentation and controls requirements.
  • Assess technology selection, system architecture, interconnection, safety standards, emergency response, warranties, supply chain and end-of-life.
  • Develop or challenge lifecycle cost, benefit, revenue, sensitivity and replacement assumptions.
  • Create or review feasibility/TOR tasks, performance tests, acceptance criteria, implementation risks and recovery options.
Minimum evidence-based qualifications
  • Direct utility-scale or commercial/industrial BESS engineering, integration, safety, operations, procurement, modeling or investment-analysis experience.
  • Evidence of personally sizing, modeling, commissioning, assuring or independently reviewing storage projects and decision products.
  • Experience with weak grids, island systems, hybrid plants or emerging-market procurement is preferred.
  • Demonstrated senior/expert judgment, normally supported by at least 10 years of directly relevant work and specific project or decision-product evidence.
  • Ability to separate verified facts, assumptions, professional judgments, uncertainties and recommendations in concise written English.
  • U.S. citizen or non-U.S. citizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States; written attestation is required before proposal inclusion.
  • Ability to become available for potential Regional Asia travel within 20 calendar days after Axyde's written mobilization notice following contract award, subject to assignment needs and Government direction.
  • Willingness to disclose availability, employment/contract restrictions, confidentiality obligations, conflicts, noncompetes and country/customer limitations.
Evidence to submit
  • Current resume or CV with dates, employer/client, country, project stage, personal role, methods used, decision product and outcome for the most relevant assignments.
  • Two to four representative projects that substantiate the specific expertise claimed; identify what you personally did rather than the team's general scope.
  • Countries/regions worked, languages used professionally, current location, travel limitations and relevant licenses, registrations, certifications, standards or publications.
  • Written permission for Axyde to use and evidence-preservingly reformat the resume for solicitation 1131PL26R0056, subject to final resume review if requested.
Application questions
  • Are you a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident? State one; do not upload identity documents at the application stage.
  • May Axyde use your name and evidence-preservingly tailor/reformat your resume for this specific contingent proposal?
  • Could you become available for required Regional Asia travel within 20 calendar days after Axyde's written mobilization notice following contract award? Identify restrictions.
  • Identify current employment, contractual, confidentiality, noncompete, customer, country or conflict restrictions relevant to this opportunity.
  • Describe a storage project where duty-cycle, degradation, safety or market evidence changed the design or investment decision.
  • Identify the sizing/economic tools, chemistries, safety standards and operating use cases you have directly supported.
  • Which modules can you lead: sizing, controls, interconnection, safety, lifecycle economics, procurement, commissioning or independent review?
Important contingent-opportunity notice
