Job description

The Westfield Area YMCA is looking for positive and enthusiastic individuals to join our Sports team as coaches in our Youth Basketball Programs to start in late August or early September.
The Basketball Coach is responsible for organizing, supervising and instructing basketball programming that enables participants to learn basic sport-specific skills that apply the philosophy and goals of YMCA character development.
Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
โ€ข Relate to each participant equally and consistently throughout the entire class session.
โ€ข Adapt to changes well, such as: program, student's ability level, space availability, and modifications to class plan, as needed.
โ€ข Lead a group of children and take control of situations through quick and appropriate responses, if issues arise.
โ€ข Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for basketball related programs and environments
โ€ข Maintain positive relationships with members, participants and staff through good communication and interaction.
โ€ข Coach players during practices and games (home and away)
โ€ข Build players' confidence and improve upon their skills
โ€ข Devise practice plans tailored to the development of players
โ€ข Follow the Westfield Area YMCA and league guidelines while ensuring that sportsmanship is always being demonstrated
โ€ข Be a positive role model
โ€ข Must be able to work with other coaches and staff to allow all league activity to run smoothly
โ€ข Be a team player; which includes coaching/supervising other team's practices, being able to work the scorer's table when applicable, and more
โ€ข Help with the setup and cleanup of league practices and games.
Pay : $17 - $21 per hour, depending on education and experience

Requirements
  • Must possess, maintain and renew ASHI Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and Professional Rescuers, ASHI Basic First Aid, EPI and Asthma certifications or equivalent within 90 days of hire
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, techniques and game play situation
  • Must possess the capabilities to teach using proper technique and proper progression
  • Experience working with children
  • Enthusiastic attitude
  • Good communication skills to enable them to interact with and maintain positive relations with members, participants and staff
  • Strong interpersonal skills
