Job description

Custodianย 

Hours: 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Starting pay: $20.00 plus 2nd shift: $.15/hour
BASIC FUNCTION:ย  To lead and participate in the performance of unskilled or skilled tasks in the upkeep of assigned public buildings, grounds, and related facilities.ย  Responsible for overall cleanliness, and to ensure a safe and orderly environment.ย 

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:ย ย ย 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Experience in general cleaning, chemical handling and customer service preferred, but not required.
  • Experience in school custodial department or related experience preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge or the ability to be trained to meet the responsibilities of the job.
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety codes is useful, but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of basic techniques of custodial maintenance preferred, but not mandatory.

TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:ย ย 

  • Basic problem solving skillsย 
  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate various types of cleaning equipment.ย 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changes without notice.ย 
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.ย 
  • Able to take direction and respond to requests in a courteous, helpful manner.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board of Education policies and building and department proceduresย 
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to appropriate supervisor/administrator.ย 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, etc., in assigned buildings so that health standards are met.ย 
  • Cleans rugs, carpets, upholstered furniture, and/or draperies using vacuum cleaners and/or shampooers.ย 
  • Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and/or polishes floors, using brooms, mops, and/or powered scrubbers.ย 
  • Dusts and polishes furniture and equipment.ย 
  • Washes windows, walls, ceilings, and woodwork, waxing and polishing as necessary.ย 
  • Empties wastebaskets and transports other trash and waste to disposal areas.ย 
  • Moves and arranges furniture as required.ย 
  • Removes debris from driveways, garages, and bus loading areas.ย 
  • Sorts clothing and other articles, loads washing machines, and folds dried items.ย 
  • Replaces light bulbs.ย 
  • Inspects boilers and takes water samples daily during operating season.ย 
  • Sets up and takes down lunch tables.ย 
  • Sets up and takes down chairs for special events.ย 
  • Moves portable metal bleachers between football and baseball/softball fields.ย 
  • Positions and removes portable stop sign at state highway/street intersection daily.ย 
  • Raises and lowers American and Iowa flags at beginning and end of day.ย 
  • Fills in for other shift custodial absences as required by administration.ย 
  • Makes recommendations to improve service and ensure more efficient operation.ย 
  • Examines building and reports the needs for repairs of failed equipment.ย 
  • Requests repair work as discovered and reports needs immediately for maintenance.ย 
  • Maintains grounds and performs seasonal grounds work (snow, lawn, etc.).ย 
  • Performs such yard keeping chores such as grass cutting and tree trimming.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and neat.ย 
  • Performs minor adjustments and repairs to mechanical equipment as needed.ย 
  • Follows the chain of command as required.ย 
  • Restocks disposable items and provides inventory usage and data.ย 
  • Requests supplies and equipment to complete required cleaning.ย 
  • Assists the public utilizing the facilities with directions within the building and in obtaining/setting up equipment.ย 
  • Maintains good public relations with students, parents, faculty, and community.ย 
  • Reports to work each day clean, neat, and in uniform.ย 
  • Works in all types of weather conditions.ย 
  • Must be able to get along with a wide variety of people.ย 
  • Available to work some weekends.
  • Has regular attendance.ย 
  • Reports to work when an emergency arises.
  • Manages one's own time efficiently.ย 
  • Attends annual safety training including bloodborne pathogen, asbestos, MSDS, confined space, etc.ย 
  • Attends in-service training and school meetings as appropriate.ย
