Bas Controls Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BAS Controls Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a BAS Controls Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, HVAC systems, and control logic, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with building automation systems such as Siemens, Johnson Controls, or Tridium, as well as experience with programming languages like BACnet or Modbus, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make a candidate stand out. These skills ensure reliable system integration, efficient building operations, and effective collaboration with project stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by BAS Controls Engineers when integrating new systems into existing building automation infrastructures?

BAS Controls Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating new automation systems with legacy equipment and software. Compatibility issues, outdated protocols, and insufficient documentation for older components can complicate the process. Successful integration typically requires thorough site assessments, creative problem-solving, and close collaboration with facility managers and other engineering teams to ensure seamless operation and minimal downtime. Staying updated on industry standards and emerging technologies also helps mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Bas Controls Engineer vs Controls Technician?

AspectBas Controls EngineerControls Technician
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or control engineeringOften has an associate degree or technical certification in controls or electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign, develop, and oversee control systems in industrial or building automation projectsInstall, troubleshoot, and maintain control systems and equipment on-site
Industry UsageUsed in building automation, manufacturing, and industrial facilitiesCommonly employed in maintenance and field service roles within similar industries

While both roles work with control systems, the Bas Controls Engineer focuses on design and development, whereas the Controls Technician handles installation and maintenance. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What are BAS Controls Engineers?

BAS Controls Engineers are professionals who design, program, install, and maintain Building Automation Systems (BAS) in commercial and industrial facilities. These systems control and monitor mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems such as HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management. BAS Controls Engineers work to improve building efficiency, occupant comfort, and energy savings by ensuring that all automated systems function correctly and optimally.

This role requires strong controls experience with DDC systems, BACnet, I/O mapping, and industrial or facility automation platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, configure, and troubleshoot BAS and HVAC control systems.
  • Develop and modify PLC programs using RSLogix, Omron, or similar platforms.
  • Configure HMI and SCADA systems using AVEVA/Wonderware, Ignition, or related software.
  • Perform I/O mapping, point-to-point checkout, device integration, and system validation.
  • Support DDC programming, BACnet communication, control sequences, and networked building systems.
  • Commission control systems in the field, including startup, functional testing, calibration, and troubleshooting.
  • Work with mechanical, electrical, commissioning, and facility teams to resolve controls issues.
  • Review control drawings, sequences of operation, wiring diagrams, and project specifications.
  • Support documentation including control narratives, test reports, as-builts, and commissioning records.
  • Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, optimization, and performance improvements.

Required Experience

  • 5 or more years of experience in BAS, HVAC controls, DDC systems, automation, or controls engineering.
  • Experience with PLC programming, preferably RSLogix and Omron.
  • Working knowledge of HMI and SCADA platforms such as AVEVA/Wonderware and Ignition.
  • Strong understanding of BACnet, control protocols, I/O mapping, control loops, and field devices.
  • Hands-on commissioning, startup, troubleshooting, and system integration experience.
  • Ability to read control diagrams, wiring schematics, mechanical plans, and sequences of operation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work with engineers, technicians, contractors, and end users.

Preferred Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Controls, Automation, Mechanical, Electrical, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience with commercial, industrial, institutional, healthcare, government, or mission-critical facilities.
  • Background with HVAC equipment including AHUs, RTUs, chillers, boilers, VAVs, pumps, dampers, sensors, and valves.
  • Familiarity with Modbus, LonWorks, Niagara, Tridium, Ethernet/IP, or other building automation protocols.
  • Experience supporting controls upgrades, retrofits, energy optimization, or facility automation projects.
