What is a Barter job?

A Barter job involves trading goods or services without using money. Instead of traditional payment, individuals or businesses exchange items or labor of equal value. This type of work is common in freelance, creative, or small business environments where direct trades can be beneficial. Successful bartering requires negotiation and agreement on the value of the exchanged goods or services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Barter position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Barter, you need strong negotiation and communication skills, along with a keen understanding of market values and trade dynamics. Familiarity with inventory management systems and digital trading platforms can be highly beneficial in facilitating efficient exchanges. Strong relationship-building, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help professionals stand out in this role. These skills are important because successful bartering relies on creating mutually beneficial agreements and maintaining ongoing, trust-based partnerships.

What are some common challenges Barters face in their daily work and how can they overcome them?

One common challenge Barters face is ensuring that all parties perceive trades as fair and equitable, which requires thorough research and clear communication. Navigating differences in value perception, negotiating effectively, and keeping detailed records of each transaction can all be demanding tasks. Collaborating closely with inventory managers, accounting teams, and clients helps to streamline the process and build trust. Staying updated on market trends and continually refining negotiation strategies can also make the bartering process smoother and more successful.

Job description

Outside Sales Representative โ€“ 1099 Independent Contractor | Metro Trading Association

Location: Rochester Hills, MI (Field-based | Local Travel Required)
Compensation: 1099 Commission-Only | Uncapped Earnings

About Us
Metro Trading Association is a B2B trade and barter organization that helps local businesses conserve cash, fill downtime, and grow revenue by trading their products and services within a trusted membership network.

About the Role
We are looking for a self-driven, 1099 Independent Contractor to grow our membership base. You will prospect, present, and close new business owner clients into our trade and barter program. This is a commission-only opportunity with uncapped earning potential and residual income on every account you sign.

This role is ideal for experienced outside sales professionals who want the freedom of an independent contractor lifestyle with the support of a proven program.

What You'll Do
- Prospect new business clients through cold calls, walk-ins, networking events, and referrals
- Conduct in-person and virtual presentations with business owners and decision-makers
- Explain and sell the value of our barter/trade membership program
- Close new member agreements and hand off to the onboarding team
- Manage your own pipeline and activity using our CRM tools
- Represent Metro Trading Association at local business events and networking groups
- Meet or exceed monthly new member enrollment targets

What We're Looking For
- Proven outside sales or B2B sales experience
- Comfortable with cold outreach, self-prospecting, and working independently
- Strong communicator with solid closing skills
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Familiarity with small business operations
- Barter or trade experience is a plus โ€” but not required

Compensation Structure (1099 / Commission-Only)
- Commission paid on every new member you enroll
- Uncapped earnings โ€” your income is determined by your effort and results
- Flexible schedule โ€” you set your own hours and manage your own territory

This Is NOT a Salaried Position
This is a 1099 independent contractor role. There is no base salary, no hourly pay, and no employee benefits. Ideal for motivated self-starters who want control over their income and schedule.

How to Apply
Submit your application with a brief note about your outside sales experience and why you'd be a great fit for helping local businesses grow through barter.
