What skills and qualifications are needed for a barber apprenticeship?

To thrive as a Barber Apprentice, you need foundational skills in hair cutting, basic grooming techniques, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often enrolling in a state-approved barber training program. Familiarity with barbering tools such as clippers, trimmers, shears, straight razors, and sanitation equipment is essential, with apprenticeships typically leading to licensure requirements. Strong customer service, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn are important soft skills for success in this role. These attributes are crucial for delivering quality services, ensuring client satisfaction, and advancing toward becoming a licensed barber.

What is a barber apprenticeship?

A Barber Apprenticeship is a hands-on training program where an aspiring barber learns the trade under the supervision of a licensed professional. Apprentices gain practical experience in haircutting, shaving, styling, and sanitation while also studying essential theory. This pathway allows individuals to earn while they learn and fulfill licensing requirements in many states. The duration and requirements vary by location, but it typically takes between one to two years to complete.

How to get a barber apprenticeship?

To get a barber apprenticeship, applicants typically need to complete a state-approved cosmetology or barbering program and obtain the necessary licensing. Apprenticeship programs combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction and often require a minimum age and a high school diploma or equivalent. Applying directly to barbershops or salons that offer apprenticeships is also common practice.

Is a barber apprenticeship worth it?

A barber apprenticeship provides hands-on training, mentorship, and the opportunity to develop practical skills necessary for a barbering career. It often leads to certification or licensing, which are required to work independently, making it a valuable step for aspiring barbers. The apprenticeship also offers real-world experience in a salon or barbershop environment, helping to build client skills and industry knowledge.

What does a barber apprentice do?

As a barber apprentice, your typical day involves assisting licensed barbers with preparing client stations, cleaning and sanitizing tools, scheduling appointments, and observing or performing basic haircuts and grooming under supervision. You’ll spend much of your time learning about various hair types, practicing shaving techniques, and developing your customer service skills with real clients. Apprenticeships are hands-on and require close collaboration with both experienced barbers and fellow apprentices to build confidence and proficiency. This daily environment offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical skills and industry knowledge while preparing for eventual licensure.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
