What is a bar staff?

Bar staff are employees who work in bars, pubs, or similar establishments, serving drinks and sometimes food to customers. Their responsibilities often include taking orders, preparing and serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, handling payments, and maintaining cleanliness behind the bar. Bar staff may also check identification to ensure customers are of legal drinking age, restock supplies, and provide customer service to enhance the guest experience. In some cases, they may also help with setting up or closing the bar and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

What are different types of bar jobs?

Bar jobs include roles like a bartender, bar porter, host, server, and bar manager. In a bar job, you may work independently or as part of a restaurant to mix drinks, provide customer service to each patron, and monitor each customer's consumption of alcohol following local legislation. You may also help create and implement beverage policies and procedures, ensure adequate inventory, and help manage a budget. Many bar positions involve interacting with patrons to obtain feedback, preparing and serving food, and standing for extended periods. Some bars are regularly exposed to environmental factors like secondhand smoke or excessive noise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bartender, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bartender, you need knowledge of drink recipes, mixology techniques, and safe alcohol service, often supported by completion of responsible beverage service training. Familiarity with bar POS systems, glassware, and bar equipment is typically required. Excellent customer service, multitasking, and communication skills help bartenders create positive guest experiences and handle busy shifts. These skills are essential for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service, and a safe, enjoyable bar environment.

What are some common challenges faced by bartenders during busy shifts, and how can they manage them effectively?

During busy shifts, bartenders frequently encounter challenges such as high order volumes, multitasking under pressure, and maintaining accuracy with drink orders. Effective time management, strong communication with barbacks and servers, and staying organized at the workstation are key strategies for handling these challenges. Building a system for quickly prioritizing orders and keeping a positive attitude with customers also helps ensure smooth service and a positive team dynamic.

Both roles are essential in the hospitality industry, but they differ in responsibilities and credentials.

What are the roles in a bar?

A bar typically employs roles such as bartenders, who prepare and serve drinks; barbacks, who assist bartenders and maintain the bar area; and managers, who oversee operations and staff. Bar and Hospitality Manager

Left Hand Brewing Company

Denver, CO โ€ข On-site

Job description

Description:

Left Hand Collective is looking for an outstanding Bar and Hospitality Manager. A passion for serving others and sharing our beer and food to our customers – all with a desire to learn and grow others – is a must. The ideal candidate will have a natural ability to work well under pressure all while keeping a positive demeanor and staying on task.

The Bar & Hospitality Manager is responsible for leading the bar program, guest experience, and hospitality culture across two unique Denver restaurants: Left Hand RiNo Drinks & Eats and Dry Dock Pub.

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who loves being behind the bar, on the floor, developing people, and creating memorable guest experiences. While strong beverage knowledge is important, this position is ultimately about hospitality, leadership, consistency, and developing great teams.

This position will work closely with the General Manager and location bar-leads to establish service standards, develop bartenders and FOH staff, improve beverage execution, and ensure guests receive an exceptional experience regardless of which location they visit.

This is not a desk-heavy management position. The ideal candidate wants to be present during service, interact with guests, coach employees in real time, and lead by example.

Qualifications Required

• 3+ years of restaurant/bar experience.

• Previous leadership, bar lead, supervisor, or management experience.

• Strong knowledge of beer, cocktails, spirits, and bar operations.

• Demonstrated ability to train and develop employees.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Comfortable working in high-volume environments.

• Ability to lead with both accountability and empathy.

• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, events, and other peak business periods.

• Ability and willingness to regularly work at both Denver locations.

-Preferred-

• Experience managing or supervising a high-volume bar program.

• Craft beer knowledge.

• Cocktail development experience.

• Experience with beverage inventory and cost controls.

• Experience working across multiple restaurant locations.

• Experience with Toast or similar restaurant POS/reporting systems.

• Experience developing training programs or mentoring bartenders.

The Person We're Looking For

- We are looking for someone who understands that great hospitality isn't scripted.

- You should care about the details of a perfectly poured beer or well-made cocktail, but care just as much about whether the person sitting at the bar feels welcomed and the team you curate embodies the companies values You should enjoy teaching people, developing employees, talking with guests, solving problems, and jumping behind the bar when things get busy.

- We want a leader who can hold high standards without creating a rigid or overly corporate environment. Our restaurants should be professional without losing their personality, and our employees should be encouraged to bring their own personality to the guest experience.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who takes ownership.

-When the bar is busy, you're there.

-When a bartender needs coaching, you coach them.

-When a guest has a bad experience, you help fix it.

-When something isn't working, you don't just point it out, you help make it better.

Pay Band: $ 57,784 - $65,000 salaried position paid on a biweekly basis.
