What is a bar staff?

Bar staff are employees who work in bars, pubs, or similar establishments, serving drinks and sometimes food to customers. Their responsibilities often include taking orders, preparing and serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, handling payments, and maintaining cleanliness behind the bar. Bar staff may also check identification to ensure customers are of legal drinking age, restock supplies, and provide customer service to enhance the guest experience. In some cases, they may also help with setting up or closing the bar and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.

What are different types of bar jobs?

Bar jobs include roles like a bartender, bar porter, host, server, and bar manager. In a bar job, you may work independently or as part of a restaurant to mix drinks, provide customer service to each patron, and monitor each customer's consumption of alcohol following local legislation. You may also help create and implement beverage policies and procedures, ensure adequate inventory, and help manage a budget. Many bar positions involve interacting with patrons to obtain feedback, preparing and serving food, and standing for extended periods. Some bars are regularly exposed to environmental factors like secondhand smoke or excessive noise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bartender, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Bartender, you need knowledge of drink recipes, mixology techniques, and safe alcohol service, often supported by completion of responsible beverage service training. Familiarity with bar POS systems, glassware, and bar equipment is typically required. Excellent customer service, multitasking, and communication skills help bartenders create positive guest experiences and handle busy shifts. These skills are essential for ensuring customer satisfaction, efficient service, and a safe, enjoyable bar environment.

What are some common challenges faced by bartenders during busy shifts, and how can they manage them effectively?

During busy shifts, bartenders frequently encounter challenges such as high order volumes, multitasking under pressure, and maintaining accuracy with drink orders. Effective time management, strong communication with barbacks and servers, and staying organized at the workstation are key strategies for handling these challenges. Building a system for quickly prioritizing orders and keeping a positive attitude with customers also helps ensure smooth service and a positive team dynamic.

Both roles are essential in the hospitality industry, but they differ in responsibilities and credentials.

What are the roles in a bar?

A bar typically employs roles such as bartenders, who prepare and serve drinks; barbacks, who assist bartenders and maintain the bar area; and managers, who oversee operations and staff. Job description

Wine Bar Manager
Full-Time | Commune | Brooklyn, NY
Salary: $70,000 annually, with the opportunity to increase to $75,000 following a successful
six-month performance review.
Schedule: Full-time, 40–45 hours per week | Tuesday–Saturday
About Commune
Commune is a neighborhood wine bar where wine, food, music, art, and conversation come together. We believe wine should be welcoming rather than intimidating, and that hospitality is built through generosity, curiosity, and genuine human connection. Our goal is to become one of Brooklyn's leading destinations for wine engagement, thoughtful service, and community. We're looking for an experienced hospitality professional to help us continue building that vision.
About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who thrives on the floor, enjoys working with a
small team, and believes exceptional hospitality comes from consistency, attention to detail, and genuine care for guests. While wine knowledge is essential, this is first and foremost an operations and people-management
role. We're looking for someone who can lead by example, build culture, maintain high standards, and create an environment where both guests and staff feel welcome. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who takes ownership, solves problems before they're noticed, and is excited to help establish Commune as one of Brooklyn's premier destinations for wine culture and neighborly hospitality.
Responsibilities
• Lead all day-to-day front-of-house operations
• Manage service while maintaining an active presence on the floor
• Train, and mentor front-of-house staff
• Create weekly schedules and manage labor effectively
• Lead daily pre-service meetings and oversee ongoing staff education
• Foster a culture of hospitality, accountability, and teamwork
• Ensure service standards are consistently executed
• Support private events, wine dinners, and community programming
• Assist with opening, closing, cash handling, and administrative responsibilities
• Oversee inventory organization, receiving deliveries, stocking, and operational readiness
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and oversee execution of the food program during service
• Ensure compliance with NYC Department of Health standards and all applicable alcohol service
regulations
• Resolve guest concerns professionally while creating memorable hospitality experiences
• Work closely with Ownership and the Beverage Coordinator to improve systems, refine service
standards, and help grow the business
Qualifications
• Minimum 5 years of restaurant experience, including direct wine service and/or sales
• Proven leadership experience
• Wine knowledge and confidence discussing wine with guests
• Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
• NYC Food Protection Certificate (required)
• Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Ability to lift and move wine cases (25+ lbs.)

What We're Looking For

We're not simply looking for someone to manage shifts—we're looking for someone who wants to help build something meaningful. This is an opportunity to continue shaping the identity of a growing hospitality program while gaining meaningful leadership experience. We value initiative, curiosity, and people who naturally look for
ways to improve the guest experience. If you're energized by mentoring a team, refining service, contributing ideas, and helping Commune become one of Brooklyn's premier destinations for wine, hospitality, and community, we'd love to meet you.
