Bankers often begin their careers in entry-level roles such as teller or personal banker, where they develop customer service and financial product knowledge. With experience and strong performance, they can progress to positions like relationship manager, branch manager, or specialized roles in commercial lending, wealth management, or credit analysis. Many institutions offer professional development programs and mentorship to support growth, making it common for motivated bankers to advance into leadership or more specialized financial roles over time.

What does a banker do?

Bankers assist both personal and commercial clients with financial questions and needs. They typically operate out of local banks, credit unions, or other financial institutions and may travel or work remotely as needed. Clients rely on bankers for a wide variety of financial services including account setup and updates, budget planning, and financial monitoring. In some instances, a banker may be asked to lend financial advice or to walk a client through individual opportunity risks and returns. Bankers typically work a nine to five, Monday through Friday schedule and adhere to a business casual dress code.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a banker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Banker, you need strong financial acumen, attention to detail, and a relevant degree in finance, business, or economics. Familiarity with financial software, banking regulations, and customer relationship management (CRM) systems is typically expected. Outstanding interpersonal skills, integrity, and problem-solving abilities help bankers build trust and effectively serve diverse clients. These skills are critical for managing financial products, addressing customer needs, and ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment.

Job description

More than 130 years ago, we started with core values that never go out of style: listen, learn and help businesses and individuals reach their goals. Our financial strength and stability are key reasons Forbes names us one of the Best 100 Banks in America the past eight consecutive years and Newsweek names Banner one of the Most Trustworthy Companies the past four years.

With more than $15 billion in assets and over 150 locations throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and California, we understand our role in the economy and take that responsibility seriously. In addition to offering a source of capital to personal banking clients and businesses of all sizes, we place a high importance on employee volunteerism and donate millions of dollars each year to community organizations.

As a Banker, you’ll be the welcoming face of the branch and a key partner in helping clients reach their financial goals. Your work ensures that every interaction is accurate, friendly, and aligned with our commitment to exceptional service. This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys connection, teamwork, and being part of a supportive, growth‑oriented environment.
In this role you'll
  • Process client transactions accurately and efficiently while following established policies and procedures.
  • Provide an excellent client experience and represent the Bank with professionalism and care.
  • Help clients achieve financial goals by referring products, services, and Bank specialists when appropriate.
  • Serve as a leader in sales, operations, and client service within the branch.
  • Support branch operations, including mentoring, training, and coaching members of the teller team.
  • Work collaboratively to complete assignments with quality and timeliness, with or without direct supervision.
  • Maintain strong personal reliability and punctuality.
  • Engage in in‑person and phone conversations to identify and sell Bank products and services, meeting minimum referral standards.
  • Open new accounts using the Banner Way sales process, when assigned.
  • Ensure full compliance with policies, procedures, security requirements, and regulatory standards.
What we're looking for
  • You have a High School Diploma or GED (Required).
  • You have two or more years of teller experience that includes sales experience with established goals (Required).
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience can be considered in lieu of a degree.
What helps you shine
  • You bring strong organizational skills and enjoy focusing on details.
  • You’re comfortable with Windows‑based applications, calculators, and basic PC tasks.
  • You have solid math, negotiation, and problem‑solving abilities.
  • You communicate clearly in both verbal and written formats, and use polished phone and email etiquette.
  • You build relationships easily and bring excellent customer service to every interaction.
  • You’re able to work branch hours as scheduled.
  • You’re able to lift and move up to 25 pounds as part of essential job functions.
Our company values
  • Do the right thing
  • Mutual respect
  • Teamwork
  • Honesty and integrity
What our team says
  • "I have the opportunity to learn and grow every day in my current role. I love the work life balance, knowing that we work hard, and strive for high performance but we are celebrated." – Glassdoor review
Compensation & benefits
  • Targeted starting salary range (based on experience): $19.00-$24.59
  • Annual incentive potential
  • Comprehensive employee benefits, including: medical, dental, vision, LTD, STD and life
  • Paid vacation time, sick time and 11 company paid holidays
  • 401k (with up to 4% match)
