Job description

TPosition Overview:

This 10-week summer internship provides students with a unique, hands-on opportunity to gain exposure to Retail Banking while being trained as a Teller. Interns will work alongside experienced branch professionals and rotate across multiple branch locations as a Float Teller Intern, gaining insight into daily branch operations, customer service, and financial transactions. This role is ideal for students interested in business, finance, customer service, or banking careers who are eager to learn in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.

Retail Banking plays a critical role in supporting customers with their everyday financial needs, including deposits, withdrawals, account servicing, and digital banking education. Through this internship, students will develop foundational knowledge of banking operations, customer engagement, and professional workplace skills while delivering exceptional service to customers.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Deliver a welcoming and professional customer experience by meeting and greeting customers and assisting with their immediate banking needs.

  • Adhere to established customer service standards and demonstrate empathy, flexibility, and customer-centric problem solving.

  • Accurately process and balance customer transactions in accordance with bank policies and procedures.

  • Assist with basic account maintenance and transactional servicing.

  • Learn and follow cash handling, balancing, and operational procedures.

  • Support branch operational activities as appropriate (e.g., vault support, ATM servicing, wire preparation, and cash ordering).

  • Work under direct supervision while developing communication, time management, and teamwork skills.

  • Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite.

  • Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

  • Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Additional Position Requirements:

  • Availability to work for the full 10-week summer program.

  • Reliable transportation required due to floating between branch locations.

  • Availability to work Saturdays, as applicable.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Scope of Responsibilities:
  • Works under direct supervision with clear guidance and support.

  • Internship is for a fixed duration, typically aligned with academic schedules (e.g., summer or semester-based).

Education and Experience Required:

Currently pursuing or had recently completed their high school diploma.

Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.

Education and Experience Preferred:

Prior office or administrative experience is a plus.

Strong interest in customer service, business, or financial services.

Strong communication and organizational skills.
