The Role and Why It's Important
The Wine and Spirits Assistant Department Manager supports the Department Manager in presenting the freshest, most innovative, and best quality products at a competitive price. In this role, you'll supervise the team, manage inventory, maintain the sales floor, and step in as the department leader when the manager is away.

What You'll Do
No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:
  • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and making every interaction a positive one
  • Supervise and assign work for the evening and part-time crew and train new employees
  • Stock, rotate, and face product on shelves and review out-of-stocks, ad items, and back stock
  • Order merchandise as directed by the department head and control inventory
  • Monitor sales regularly and make sales suggestions and ideas to the Department Manager
  • Meet with vendors to obtain point-of-purchase materials and other sales-enhancing items
  • Oversee intercom selling and price items for displays
  • Review price tags and update signage as needed
  • Handle and resolve customer issues with care and professionalism
  • Assume management duties in the absence of the Department Manager
  • Unload trucks and ensure product is stocked in the appropriate area
  • Clean display cases and monitor maintenance of equipment and floors
  • Practice proper sanitation procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area at all times
  • Instruct, assign, and review the work of Wine and Spirits Clerks, maintaining standards and coordinating activities
  • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as required
  • Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time

Your Skills
  • Follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions across a variety of situations with concrete variables
  • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages accurately
  • File, post, and organize materials; copy data accurately between records; and guide people with clear direction
  • Lead and develop a team while building a collaborative, customer-focused department culture

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Perishables, Store Operations, and Health Wellness Home; Wine and Spirits Department Manager
Direct Reports: Wine and Spirits Clerks
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent experience required; six months or less of related work experience preferred

Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment
This is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment with continuous exposure to noise, temperature extremes, and dampness, frequent exposure to equipment movement hazards and cleaning chemicals or solvents, and occasional potential for electrical hazards.
