What does a bakery manager do?

As a bakery manager, your central responsibilities are to ensure your bakery is profitable and well-maintained. You assess sales reports so you can see which of your baked goods or pastry are selling well and which are not. Based on your assessments, in consultation with the bakers and owners, you make decisions about what inventory you should to stock. Your duties also include managing the front-of-house staff. You make schedules and hire and train new employees. It is useful for a bakery manager to have job experience working in a bakery as an assistant manager or a shift leader.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bakery manager?

To thrive as a Bakery Manager, you need strong knowledge of baking techniques, food safety standards, inventory management, and prior experience in food service or hospitality. Familiarity with bakery production equipment, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and certifications like ServSafe are typically required. Leadership, organization, and excellent customer service skills help you motivate staff and create a positive environment. These skills ensure efficient operations, high product quality, customer satisfaction, and compliance with health regulations.

What are some common challenges bakery managers face in balancing production schedules with customer demand?

Bakery Managers often need to carefully forecast customer demand to ensure that fresh products are always available without overproducing and causing waste. This requires strong organizational skills and close attention to sales trends, seasonal fluctuations, and special events. Additionally, managers must coordinate staffing and inventory orders to keep production running smoothly, all while maintaining high quality and safety standards. Open communication with team members and adaptability are key to successfully meeting these challenges.

Job description

Our Flavor Story

At Brookhaven Market, we're more than just a chain of family-owned grocery stores; we're dedicated to crafting memorable customer experiences. Our mission is to bring the world's best foods to the communities we serve, ensuring every shopping trip is a journey of culinary delight.

The Sweet Spot

Brookhaven Market is hiring a Full-Time Bakery Manager (onsite) for our Mokena, IL store, paying $20–$23/hour. This role exists to keep our bakery running smoothly, beautifully, and deliciously—while you guide the team and protect the standards you already know matter.
Key responsibilities include leading bakery clerks, setting production plans, managing inventory and costs, building attention-grabbing displays, supporting customers with special requests, and maintaining food safety, cleanliness, and organization. You’ll also partner with store leadership on promotions and seasonal items.
Required skills/qualifications:
- Bakery or food service management experience (supervisory preferred)
- Confident, motivating leadership and clear communication
- Knowledge of baking techniques, food safety, and inventory control
- Strong time management, prioritization, and detail focus
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods
- Flexibility for evenings, weekends, and holidays
If you’re ready to run a department you can be proud of, apply today.

Your Daily Bake-Down

You kick off by checking the case and the day’s bake plan, then do quick huddles to get everyone in rhythm. Between proofing, pulling product, and keeping the floor looking sharp, you’re bouncing from the bench to the sales floor—answering a cake question here, fine-tuning a display there. Midday is all about pacing: making sure the next waves are ready, product stays fresh, and the department stays tidy. As the rush hits, you keep things moving, step in where needed, and wrap up by setting the team up for tomorrow.

Perks Offered

Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage; Paid Time Off; and Employee Discounts—so you can take care of yourself, recharge, and enjoy savings on your grocery runs.
