What does a bakery manager do?

As a bakery manager, your central responsibilities are to ensure your bakery is profitable and well-maintained. You assess sales reports so you can see which of your baked goods or pastry are selling well and which are not. Based on your assessments, in consultation with the bakers and owners, you make decisions about what inventory you should to stock. Your duties also include managing the front-of-house staff. You make schedules and hire and train new employees. It is useful for a bakery manager to have job experience working in a bakery as an assistant manager or a shift leader.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a bakery manager?

To thrive as a Bakery Manager, you need strong knowledge of baking techniques, food safety standards, inventory management, and prior experience in food service or hospitality. Familiarity with bakery production equipment, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and certifications like ServSafe are typically required. Leadership, organization, and excellent customer service skills help you motivate staff and create a positive environment. These skills ensure efficient operations, high product quality, customer satisfaction, and compliance with health regulations.

What are some common challenges bakery managers face in balancing production schedules with customer demand?

Bakery Managers often need to carefully forecast customer demand to ensure that fresh products are always available without overproducing and causing waste. This requires strong organizational skills and close attention to sales trends, seasonal fluctuations, and special events. Additionally, managers must coordinate staffing and inventory orders to keep production running smoothly, all while maintaining high quality and safety standards. Open communication with team members and adaptability are key to successfully meeting these challenges.

Job description

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary
  • Dental insurance
  • Employee discounts
  • Flexible schedule
  • Free uniforms
  • Bonus based on performance

As the Bakery Manager at Nothing Bundt Cakes, you’ll lead the daily operation of a bakery that brings joy to our guests and community. You’ll develop a strong team, maintain exceptional product and guest-service standards, and ensure the bakery is organized, properly staffed and ready for business each day.
This is a hands-on leadership position—not a desk-only management role. We’re looking for a dependable, organized leader who takes ownership, communicates concerns early and follows through. The right person will be comfortable working alongside the team while also managing schedules, training, inventory, performance and daily bakery priorities.
What You’ll Own
  • Lead daily bakery operations and create a positive, respectful and professional work environment.
  • Prepare team schedules, manage routine callouts and adjust coverage as business needs change.
  • Organize and oversee new-hire training, ongoing development and cross-training.
  • Provide regular coaching, communicate clear expectations and address performance concerns promptly.
  • Create production plans and ensure the bakery is appropriately staffed and prepared for anticipated sales.
  • Manage ordering, inventory, par levels and supplies while minimizing shortages and unnecessary waste.
  • Maintain Nothing Bundt Cakes standards for product quality, guest service, merchandising, cleanliness and food safety.
  • Facilitate opening and closing responsibilities, including cash controls, deposits and daily administrative tasks.
  • Monitor labor, inventory, product costs and other controllable expenses.
  • Stay current on Brand communications, programs and guidelines and ensure they are consistently implemented.
  • Maintain hands-on knowledge of bakery positions and step into guest service, production, cleaning or other responsibilities when needed.
  • Keep the bakery owners informed of staffing, performance, operational and safety concerns and bring forward recommended solutions.
How the Owners Partner With You
The bakery owners remain actively involved in hiring, payroll, marketing, and higher-level business decisions. They are available to provide guidance and support when needed.
The Bakery Manager is expected to independently manage routine daily operations, training, scheduling, staffing coverage, ordering, and team communication. Success in this position means identifying concerns early, taking appropriate action, and following through—not waiting for the owners to discover or resolve routine bakery issues.
What We’re Looking For
  • At least three years of leadership experience in retail, hospitality, food service, or a similar team-oriented environment
  • Experience scheduling, training, coaching, and holding employees accountable
  • A reliable, hands-on leader who models the standards expected from the team
  • Strong organization, communication, problem-solving and follow-up skills
  • The ability to balance team leadership with production, guest-service and business priorities
  • Basic understanding of labor, inventory, waste, sales and the factors that affect profitability
  • Comfort using scheduling, point-of-sale, email and basic Microsoft Office systems
  • Food-safety certification or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days

Apply now. Joy is the job—and strong leadership makes it possible.
