What are bail bonds in Texas?

Bail bonds in Texas are financial agreements made by a bail bond agent on behalf of a defendant to ensure their release from jail while awaiting trial. The bail bond serves as a guarantee that the defendant will appear in court as required. Typically, the defendant or their family pays a non-refundable fee, usually 10% of the total bail amount, to the bail bond agent. If the defendant fails to appear in court, the agent may be responsible for paying the full bail amount and may take steps to locate and return the defendant to custody. Bail bonds help defendants avoid prolonged jail time before their court date.
