Backstage Assistant information

What is a backstage assistant?

Backstage Assistants are essential team members who help ensure that performances, fashion shows, concerts, or other live events run smoothly behind the scenes. Their responsibilities often include organizing costumes and props, assisting performers with quick changes, managing equipment, and communicating with stage managers. They play a crucial role in maintaining order and timing backstage, helping to solve problems quickly as they arise. Their work is mostly unseen by the audience but is vital to the success of any live production.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a backstage assistant during a live performance?

As a Backstage Assistant, your daily responsibilities during a live performance often include organizing and tracking props, assisting with quick costume changes, ensuring performers are in the correct places at the right times, and maintaining clear communication with stage management. You'll also help with setting up and striking sets between scenes, and may be called upon to resolve unexpected issues quickly and discreetly. Teamwork is essential, as you'll be working closely with stage managers, performers, and technical crew to ensure smooth show operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a backstage assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backstage Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to multitask, often supported by experience in theater production or stage management. Familiarity with stage equipment, communication systems like headsets, and basic safety protocols is typically required. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help you stand out in this fast-paced environment. These skills ensure smooth show operations, quick resolution of issues, and effective coordination among crew members during live performances.

What is the difference between Backstage Assistant vs Stagehand?

Backstage Assistants and Stagehands both work behind the scenes in entertainment settings. While Backstage Assistants typically handle support tasks like organizing props and assisting performers, Stagehands focus more on technical setup, lighting, and scene changes. Both roles require some technical knowledge and are essential for smooth production operations, but their specific duties and environments differ slightly.

Returning applicants: If you have worked for Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group in a prior season, please contact your location manager directly regarding rehire status. Do not submit a new application through the online system.

What You'll Do

As a Seasonal Wardrobe Assistant, you're the reason every performer hits the floor looking exactly right—every single night. Working under the direction of the Wardrobe Manager, you'll keep costumes show-ready, support quick changes without missing a beat, and uphold the visual standards that make our attractions unforgettable.

  • Prepare and organize the wardrobe area before each show for maximum speed and accessibility

  • Assign, document, and recollect wardrobe items according to approved designs, maintaining accurate records for every performer

  • Fit performers with costumes suited to their body shape and size, ensuring both comfort and visual impact

  • Conduct a final inspection of every look using the 8-point checklist before each performer is deployed—no detail too small

Maintenance & Repair

  • Inspect costumes throughout the night for wear, damage, or malfunction and apply immediate fixes to keep every piece stage-ready

  • Perform timely repairs, alterations, and adjustments under tight time constraints without disrupting show flow

  • Clean, refresh, and prep wardrobe items for each show run, maintaining presentation and hygiene standards

  • Maintain costumes, footwear, props, and accessories throughout the event season to the highest possible standard

Inventory & Organization

  • Coordinate the intake, inspection, and documentation of all costumes and uniform pieces at the start of each shift

  • Pack soiled costumes for laundering and efficiently process clean returns for immediate reuse

  • Maintain accurate inventory records and rotate duties as directed by the Wardrobe Manager

Performance Support

  • Execute rapid costume changes and styling assists during live shows—zero delays tolerated

  • Provide hands-on backstage support to performers during show runs, rehearsals, and pre-show preparations

  • Offer constructive, professional feedback on appearance and grooming when standards aren't met

Safety & Post-Show Reset

  • Adhere to all safety protocols to maintain a secure and organized backstage environment

  • Ensure thorough cleanup, repacking, and organized storage of all wardrobe items after each performance

What You Bring
  • Keen eye for detail and a genuine commitment to high-quality, consistent results

  • Ability to move quickly and work efficiently under tight show launch deadlines without sacrificing accuracy

  • Comfortable in loud, high-traffic, high-energy environments—including extreme temperatures

  • Positive, cooperative team player who performs at their best under pressure

  • Punctual and consistent attendance throughout the full season—mandatory training and pre-season prep included

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
